The Library Is Open on Martin Luther King Jr. Day

On the third Monday of each January, the Canton Public Library receives dozens of calls asking if we are open. It’s a reasonable question: As a federal holiday, many schools, banks, and other institutions close to commemorate the life and work of Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. The answer is yes; the library is open.

“The library is open because the Civil Rights Movement was about providing equal access to all—including in public libraries,” explains CPL Director Eva Davis. “Some towns had separate entrances and areas for Black people, and many towns had no library access for Black people at all. So, we are open to fulfill the goal of a public library that provides access and information to everyone regardless of background.”

We are happy to serve our community on January 19, 2026, in honor of Dr. King and his legacy. Please stop by to pick up a book, movie or other item, or take advantage of our comfortable reading spaces.

If you are seeking opportunities to learn and engage on MLK Day, Canton Leisure Services and Plymouth-Canton Community Schools are hosting a celebration event with student performances, art, spoken word and more. This is a free, all-ages event taking place at the Village Arts Factory from 6:30-8:30 PM.
