Policies and Guidelines

The policies linked below have been approved by the Canton Public Library's Board of Trustees. They are intended to support CPL's mission of connecting your community.

Patron Code of Conduct

The Patron Code of Conduct covers 17 rules (and their enforcement) that ensure a safe and comfortable environment for all patrons, such as:

  • Accompany and Supervise Children
  • Monitor Personal Belongings and Clean up after Yourself
  • Treat People and Property in a Respectful Manner

Meeting Room Policy

The Meeting Room Policy outlines how to reserve one of our meeting spaces:

  • Meeting rooms are not available for party-type functions
  • Events must be open to all persons who wish to attend

Volunteer Code of Conduct

The Volunteer Code of Conduct provides clear rules for the decorum of our wonderful volunteers, such as:

  • It's inappropriate/unsafe to wear open-toed shoes and other clothing
  • Friendly, courteous behavior toward everyone using the library is expected

Circulation Policy

Our Circulation Policy outlines what's necessary to get a library card and use it to check out materials. For instance:

  • Cards are available if you live, work, or go to school in Canton; or for an annual cost
  • Materials circulate according to a borrowing schedule

Computing Resources Policies & Procedures

The Computing Resources Policies & Procedures govern the usage of computers and internet connections at the library, including:

  • Users may not install any type of software on library computers
  • CPL reserves the right to delete spam, flaming, and off-topic comments

Exhibit and Display Policy

The Exhibit and Display Policy dictates the appropriate usage of bulletin boards and display areas on the library premises. Worth noting:

  • The library does not accept exhibits of a purely commercial nature
  • Exhibit space must be reserved in advance

Board Bylaws

The Board Bylaws dictates the rules and procedures for the operation of Canton Public Library's Board. Topics include:

  • Requirements for membership
  • Official duties of the Board

Study Room Guidelines

The Study Room Guidelines help ensure the fair and equitable use of our twelve study rooms:

  • Those who use the rooms must occupy them
  • Rooms A-F are for group use. Single users may be asked to move.

Michigan Library Privacy Act

The Michigan Library Privacy Act provides for the confidentiality of certain library records; and for the selection and use of library materials:

  • The release or disclosure of library records without consent is prohibited
  • Libraries must enact and enforce a policy to protect minors on the internet

Americans with Disabilities Act

The Canton Public Library affirms its support of equal access for persons with disabilities and the Americans with Disabilities Act. The library seeks to make its services, facilities and programs as accessible as possible to the public, including those who have disabilities.

Materials Selection Policy

The purpose of the Canton Public Library Materials Selection Policy is to set broad guidelines in order to assemble, preserve, organize, administer and promote the use of a wide range of communication media and to inform the public about the principles upon which selections are made. These functions are undertaken to further the objectives of the Canton Public Library.

Freedom of Information Act Policy

The Canton Public Library adopts the public policy set forth in the Michigan Freedom of Information Act that all persons, except those persons incarcerated in state, county or federal correctional facilities, are entitled to full and complete information regarding the affairs of government and the official acts of those who represent them as public officials and public employees, consistent with the FOIA.
