There are 2 Ways to Get a Card

1. Sign up online.

If you live in Canton, you can sign up for a temporary online-only card to get access to our online resources.

Once you complete the form, we will contact you within 2 to 3 days to confirm your account information and provide you with your new library card number.

Temporary cards are good for up to 90 days. Convert your temporary card to a physical card for access to the full range of library services by visiting the Canton Public Library with proof of address and a photo ID.

Library Card FAQs

  • Library cards must be renewed periodically to ensure we have your up-to-date address and contact information on file and verify your residency. To renew your card, please come in person to the Check Out Desk with your photo ID. If your ID does not show a Canton, MI address, please bring proof that you live, work or go to school in Canton. Patrons who live in Canton can call 734-397-0999 for a one-time-only 90 day temporary renewal. Please visit the library within the 90 days to renew your card in person.

  • Canton residents with a Canton Public Library card have reciprocal borrowing privileges (they can borrow materials) with other libraries that are members of The Library Network (TLN). To search many of them at the same time, use the TLN Catalog.

    Residents of other TLN communities may use their local library cards at the Canton Public Library (some restrictions apply). To use your library card from one of these libraries at Canton, bring the library card issued to you by your home library to the Canton Public Library, along with photo ID, to be entered into our system.

  • Library cards are available to residents of Canton, MI, and those who work or attend school in Canton. 

    Canton Public Library also has a reciprocal relationship with many nearby libraries. This means that residents of other TLN communities may use their local library cards at Canton (some restrictions apply). Bring the library card issued to you at your home library to the Canton Public Library along with photo ID to be entered into our system.

    Non-residents can purchase Canton Public Library Card(s) for $140 annually per family. This card has all the same benefits as a resident card. $140 is Canton's average annual household tax contribution for library services.

2. Visit the Library

To access the full range of library services, please visit the main Check Out desk at the Canton Public Library with proof of address and a photo ID.

If you work or go to school but do not live in Canton, you can still get a card. You will need to show a recent paystub or other proof of employment, or current school ID/report card.

Canton Public Library also has a reciprocal relationship with many nearby libraries. This means that residents of other TLN communities may use their local library cards at Canton (some restrictions apply). Bring the library card issued to you at your home library to the Canton Public Library along with photo ID to be entered into our system.

Non-residents who don’t fall into any of the categories above can purchase a Canton Public Library card for $140 annually per family. This card has all the same benefits as a resident card.
