Reading Assistance Dogs

Kids and Tweens going into grades K-6, improve your reading skills and make a new friend by reading aloud to a dog. Sign up for a 10 minute session. Space is limited, on a first come, first serve basis, beginning at 6:25PM.
Program Date: August 10, 6:30-8:30PM

Welcome to Kindergarten

Are you going to kindergarten in September? Are you a little nervous about going to school for the first time? Come to this special storytime, just for you and your caregiver! This fun Welcome to Kindergarten programming will take place on Augut 24, 2011 from 2:00 to 2:45PM. Registration starts August 10, 2011 for children going into Kindergarten and their Caregivers.

Canton Public Library Receives Grant from Target for Family Reading Program

CANTON, MI—The Canton Public Library announced the renewal of a $2,000 Target grant to be used to continue to support the Family Reading Night program.

“Our partnership with Target continues with the awarding of this grant, which allows the Canton Public Library and the Friends of the Canton Public Library to maintain our commitment to early childhood literacy and improving lives in our community,” said Eva Davis, library director.

Over 2000 people have participated in the Target Family Reading Night program since its 2009 inception. The program offers stories, games and snacks to families with children ages 4-9 and provides a book for the family to take home and share. It encourages early childhood literacy by demonstrating techniques and supplying a book for families to model at home.

Welcome to Kindergarten

Hey kids! Are you entering Kindergarten this fall? If so, be sure to register for our fun Welcome to Kindergarten program. We are going to have a great time making new friends, having snack, hearing some stories about Kindergarten, and making a craft. Registration begins Wednesday, August 10th. Program date is Wednesday, August 24, 2011 from 2:00 until 2:45 PM. Be sure to bring your caregiver with you. See you there!

Best in Show Photo Bench

The Best in Show Dog Show was a lot of fun! We took a lot more pictures than just these, which we'll put up soon; but for now, enjoy these snaps of our canine friends and their families as they entered or exited the show.

Open Chess

Tim Heller, avid chess player, hosts informal open play while providing instruction and pointers. Beginners welcome. This program is for all ages.

Storytime at Canton Farmer's Market

On Sunday, August 14, CPL staff visits the Canton Farmer's Market to host a storytimes and crafts. The Canton Farmer's Market is open from 10:00 AM-2:00 PM Storytimes are at 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM. For all ages.

5th Grade and Up Book Discussion

Get together with other tweens and teens to talk about a great book. Register online, then check out the book at the Children’s Desk. The book selection for this month is Joey Pigza Loses Control by Jack Gantos. Register online today.

The Amazing Dewey Race

Tweens and Teens, do you watch the Amazing Race on TV? Interested in embarking on your own adventure? Join us in the library for a race of your own. You will travel around the library and complete tasks from all around the world. Maybe you will be the one to conquer the Dewey Decimal System!

First and Second Grade Book Group Registration

Guess what kids? Registration for the First and Second Grade Book discussion starts Thursday, August 4, 2011! Seats are limited so be sure to sign up. This month we are reading Uh-oh Cleo by Jessica Harper. Don't forget to pick up your book at the Children's Reference Desk after you register. Book group will meet on Thursday, August 18, 2011 from 2:00 to 2:45 p.m.

Third and Fourth Grade Book Discussion

If you had a mean old principal, what would you do? George and Harold take matters into their own hands, and the results is the Epic Novels of Captain Underpants. On August 17th at 2:00PM, third and fourth graders are invited to join us as we read and discuss The Adventures of Captain Underpants. And probably laugh a lot too. Registration begins August 3rd. Don't forget to pick up your book at the Children's Reference Desk!

Fly Fishing with James DiStefanis

Local author James DiStefanis shares his knowledge and passion for fly fishing on Wednesday, August 3rd from 7:00-8:30PM. Learn how to tie a fly and perhaps cast a line or two. No registration necessary.

Teen Mario Kart Tournament

Note: This event has been canceled.

Are you a master driver or pro mushroom thrower? On August 11 from 2:00-4:00PM, teens going into grades 7-12 can prove your driving skills at our Mario Kart Tournament.

Backyard Games for the Whole Family

Join us Thursday, July 28, 1:00-3:00PM for Backyard Games! We'll have badminton, bocce ball, croquet, lawn bowling, bubbles, sidewalk chalk, hula hoops, and a bunch more. Bring back the joy of summer with this all ages event!

Get American Kennel Club information and freebies from many local dog organizations. Meet Scoop the Newshound. Watch demonstrations from our Canton Police K-9 Unit and Canton's Pro K-9 Dog Trainer. Enjoy a free hot dog and pop. Don't miss Canton Public Library's event of the summer! No registration is required for people to attend — only dogs! See you on August 6 at 10 AM behind the library in tents.

Kanzashi Flower Class

Join us Saturday July 30th at 2:00PM as CPL librarian and local artist Laura Fawcett teaches the Japanese art of kanzashi flowers. Kanzashi are beautiful folded fabric-petal flowers you can wear in your hair or as a pin. Class participants will learn basic fabric folding techniques and make a hair clip to take home. All materials will be supplied and no experience is necessary. Ages 12 and up — Registration required. Don't forget, joining us for this program would be a great way to earn the Artist Badge for Connect Your Summer!

Manga Drawing Contest, World Cultures Edition

This year’s Manga Drawing Contest theme is "world cultures". For a chance to win great prizes, visit the entry form and instructions. Last day to enter is July 31.

Adventures in Masks

Kids, have you ever seen a mask that made you laugh, or scared you, or made you think, "What is that?" Masks are a tradition in many cultures. They are used in ceremonies, for celebrations, or for decoration. Here's your chance to make your very own scary, funny or adventurous mask.
