National Pet Day is coming up on April 11, and we're celebrating with a contest. Does your dog have an adorable floppy ear that just won't stay up? Do you have a lizard that makes a cute face, or a bird that loves to dance? Pop on over to our Facebook page starting March 7, 2023 and share your cutest pet pics in the comments.
Pets of all kinds are welcome, just make sure your submission is in by March 14, 2023. Stay tuned to our social media, and vote for your pet in the following rounds:
- First round of voting: March 21-March 28, 2023 on our website. Vote for the cutest pet in three categories—dogs, cats and other.
- Final round of voting: March 30-April 6, 2023 on our website and via display in the library. Featuring the top three pets in each category, cast your vote to determine our winners.

Celebrate National Pet Day
Take some time this month to celebrate your pets and those in need. Give your pets some extra attention. Take your dog for a walk, your guinea pig out for lap time, or treat your reptiles, birds and farm animals to an extra special snack. To help pets in need, you can donate to local rescues or volunteer. Locations near Canton include Michigan Humane, Humane Society of Huron Valley, Wag Animal Rescue, The Un-Shelter, and Last Day Dog Rescue. If you are looking for a way to help animals, or do not have pets of your own, you can make these crafts and donate them to the Michigan Humane Society.
Our fabulous librarians have collected some books below to celebrate all of our furry, scaled, feathered, hairy, cold and warm-blooded pals. Check them out to learn more or to delight in all things pets.
We all know that dogs and cats can be cuddly, and that fish are fun to watch, but there are a lot of interesting options out there for someone who wants to take a walk on the wild side with their choice of animal companion. Check out these out-of-the-ordinary pets, but don't be surprised if your parents say no to a pet cockroach!
Who doesn't love puppies and dogs? They make for some adorable and memorable characters in children's books. The library has so many great books with dogs in them, as well as books teaching you about different dog breeds and how to care for them. Check out some of these dog-filled gems and read them with your family.
Have you ever wanted a goat? Or maybe a chicken? Oh, what about a horse? While these farm friends can be great pets, be sure to check out our list of books to learn more about how to care for our unusual animal friends and the awesome adventures you could have together.
