Hobbyists and Hackers Unite

On Saturday, June 25th from 1:00-5:00PM, CPL will host some of the most creative hobbyists and hackers in the Metro Detroit Area for our second CPL Hack Day. Our Community Room will be full of demonstrations and presentations of hacks ranging from robotics to web apps to modded IKEA furniture to scrapbooking.

If you or someone you know is a 'hacker' in a special field; if you have ingenious and/or unconventional workarounds and solutions, then consider doing a presentation or having a demo table at Hack Day. Bob the Bee Guy Program

You've seen him at the Canton Farmer's Market with his delicious honey — now come meet Bob the Bee Guy on Wednesday, April 20, 7:00-8:30PM. You will learn about beekeeping and the environmental concerns about bee health in his presentation. There is no registration required for this adult program.

Craig Perdue, Naturalist Program

Dr. Craig Perdue will talk about behavioral ecology on Thursday, April 21, 3:00-4:30PM, in a presentation entitled "Bird Ancestors, Adaptations and Conversation." He will share his knowledge about working with birds of prey and other animals and explain how our actions impact their world. There is no registration required for this all ages program.

[Note: Dr. Perdue's program includes live birds.]

Vegetarian Eating Program

Learn about the benefits of vegetarian eating from Paul Krause, VP of VegMichigan on Monday, April 18, 7:00-8:30PM in his presentation Vegetarian Eating. Paul will talk about how to promote health, peace and the planet through a plant-based diet. Also (newly added to the program!) Susan Kline, author of "From the Earth with Love" will discuss transitioning to a vegetarian lifestyle. There is no registration required for this adult program.

Register March 30th for Going Batty!

Hi Kids! If you are between the ages of 3 years and 6 years old, grab your caregiver for this fun program! We will learn about bats, hear a bat story or two, make a fun craft and have a snack. The program date is Wednesday, April 13th from 7:00 to 7:45PM. Registration begins online Wednesday, March 30th! See you there!

Canton Seniors Book Discussion: April 27, 2011

Are you a fan of author Michael Connelly's stories? Reading this year's Everyone's Reading book, The Lincoln Lawyer? The Canton Seniors Book Discussion group will be discussing Mr. Connelly's book on Wednesday, April 27 from 2:00-3:00PM at Canton Public Library in Group Study Room A.

Tax Help for Canton Seniors

Free Tax Counseling for Canton's Senior taxpayers with low to moderate income is available at the Canton Senior Center in The Summit. Morning and afternoon appointments are available, however joint returns scheduled for the afternoon must have both taxpayers available. Please call the Canton Senior Center at (734) 394-5485 to schedule an appointment.

Cyberparenting Forum

Wednesday, March 30
7:00-8:30PM in the Community Room


Join in the discussion and learn from our panel as we talk about cyberparenting, bullying and protecting our kids online. Panelists include P-CEP teens, Erin MacGregor, Plymouth High School’s associate principal; Will Burgess, a GrowthWorks counselor; Sara Boritzki, Canton Township Police Department’s school resource officer; and Ellen Pare, Canton Library’s adult services librarian. The discussion will be moderated by Laurie Golden, CPL marketing and communications manager, and Frank Ruggirello Jr., Plymouth-Canton Community Schools spokesman.

Let's Go Fly a Kite

April is National Kite Month and we want to share this spring fun with you. At this program on Tuesday, April 12 at 7 p.m., you will be able to make a simple craft to take home and enjoy on those windy spring days. Families with children ages 4-9 can attend this program funded by the Target Store Early Childhood Reading Grant and the Friends of the Canton Public Library. Program includes stories, games and snacks. Participants receive a free book. Register today for this fun, family program.

Getting Fiscally Fit

SOFA, The Society of Financial Awareness, will share tips for getting yourself financially fit. SOFA is a volunteer organization of licensed financial planners who donate their time to educate the public on the finer points of making your money grow and work for you. Please join us on Thursday, March 31 at 7:00PM in the Community Room for this interesting program. No registration is needed.

Figure Skater Kristi Yamaguchi coming to Novi Borders!

If you loved watching Kristi Yamaguchi skate her way to Olympic Gold a few years back or loved watching her elegantly dance herself to the top on Dancing with the Stars, then you are in luck! Kristi is coming to the Novi Borders at 6:00PM on March 30, 2011 to sign her new picture book, "Dream Big, Little Pig." Enjoy listening to her read the book and have fun meeting her while she signs your very own copy! Click here for more information! Adults Writing Children's Lit Group

The Adults Writing Children's Lit Group will meet on Saturday, April 9th from 2-3 PM in the Purple Room. If you are interested in writing for children, join us as we share our work, get feedback and discuss the craft of writing. No registration required.

ACT Practice Test With Sylvan Learning Center

April 9th at 10:00AM (to 1:15PM) the staff from Sylvan Learning Center will administer and grade a practice ACT test here at the Library. Registration begins March 26th.

Islam Awareness Week — Muslim Women in Canton

Living As Muslim Women In Canton will feature the daily lives of several professional women, including business owners, doctors, engineers, students, scholars, mothers and more. Join us on March 24 at 7:00PM in the Community Room to hear the accomplishments and challenges of being Muslim in Canton. This program is presented by members of the Muslim Community of Western Suburbs in celebration of Islam Awareness Week.

Kiwanis Storytime

Members of the Kiwanis Club of Canton will read stories and complete fun activities. For all ages. Registration not required.

April 5 at 6:00PM the staff from Sylvan Learning Center will help you build the skills you need on test day. Registration begins March 22.
