Learn to Use Prezi

Prezi is a cloud-based presentation format that can add motion, images and action to your presentations. Get familiar with Prezi, how it works and what it can do for you in this introductory class, January 18, 6:30-8:00 PM in the Internet Lab. You must have a email or Facebook account set up to take this class. Registration is required.

Kiwanis Club of Canton Storytime

On January 4, 2012 at 7:00 PM, members of the Kiwanis Club of Canton will read stories and offer other fun activities. Don't forget to bring your listening ears! All ages welcome.

Beginning Microsoft Word

An introduction to word processing. Learn basic Word skills including creating and formatting text, printing and saving.

Prerequisite: Mouse and keyboarding skills
Date: February 15, from 6:30-8:00 PM in in the Internet Lab.
Online registration begins on January 17 at 9:00 AM.

Starfish Family Services Parenting Workshop

Have you ever looked at your kids and wondered "What are we going to do today?" Starfish Family Services will present a workshop for parents, caregivers and daycare providers titled Making Playroom Materials from Everyday Items on January 5, 2012, 9:30-11:00 AM. Attendees will identify natural, real, recycled and scrap materials for your playroom. During the program you will also make playroom materials to take back to your setting. Childcare will be provided by licensed Starfish Family Services staff. Online registration begins on December 22, 2011.

Board Gaming League

Into board games like Settlers, Carcassonne, or Puerto Rico? Drop by Saturday, February 4 between Noon and 5:45 PM for our monthly Board Gaming League of Canton meeting. Play some of the hottest games and meet some new folks!

Writers' Group

Interested in writing? Join other adults to share your work, get feedback and discuss the craft of writing. We will meet on Saturday, January 28 from 2:00-3:00 PM in the Purple Room.

Shanghai Girls Book Discussion on January 16

Shanghai girls: a novel by Lisa See — Join us on Monday, January 16 at 7:00 PM in the Purple Room to discuss this historical thriller: Pearl and May are beautiful girls in Shanghai, "the Paris of Asia." Their carefree days are over when their father informs them that to pay off his debts, he must sell his daughters as wives. As bombs fall on Shanghai and the world goes to war, the sisters flee to America to start new lives with their husbands. Along the way, they have to make sacrifices and promise to keep a secret that threatens to tear them apart.

Zumba

In partnership with Canton Township's 100 Days of Health and as a part of our multicultural programming, please join us for another lively, fun, heartpounding session of Zumba. We'll be burning off those holiday calories on January 28 at 11:00 AM in the Community Room.

Vintner's Wine and Mysteries Book Discussion

Vintner's Wine and Mysteries Book Discussion Group will meet every other month (i.e. even-numbered months) in 2012. The first meeting at Vintner's Canton Winery will be on Tuesday, February 21, 2012 from 7:00-8:00 PM.

Registration is required and will begin on January 21, 2012. The February reading selection will be available for pickup at the Canton Public Library's Help Desk on January 21.

Starkweather Bookclub Pick: Notes From the Midnight Driver

I have the pleasure of working with a fantastic group of young adults at the Starkweather Alternative High School. The Canton Public Library in cooperation with Starkweather was awarded an ALA Great Stories Club Grant a couple years ago. The book club was such a success we decided to continue meeting.

Notes from the midnight driver by Jordan Sonnenblick — A teen is sentenced to community service at a nursing home after a drunk driving arrest.

Story and Cocoa

Kids, ages 5-8, come to this program where we'll share a longer picture book, enjoy some hot cocoa and make a wintery craft. Register online beginning December 5.

St. Nick Frolics

Canton Senior Center is hosting their annual St. Nick Frolic on Wednesday, December 14 from Noon-4:00 PM at the Summit on the Park. Cost is $14 for residents and $19 for non-residents. For more information or to register call 734-394-5485.

Holidays Around the World

Celebrate the season with joyous music and cheer presented by the musical group Harpbeat. This interactive program is for children ages 4-9 with their caregivers and is funded by the Target Store Early Childhood Reading Grant and the Friends of the Canton Public Library.

Lunar New Year Celebration

Come enjoy the pageantry, music and more as we celebrate the Lunar New Year. In China it is the year of the dragon; in Vietnam it is called Tet; the Koreans call the holiday Seollal and the Tibetans celebrate Losar. All of these holidays and more are in honor of the New Year and are based on the lunar calendar. Celebrate with us on Monday, January 30th, at 7:00 PM.

Zumba for Adults

Senior Wii Bowling

Seniors have fun on a Wii Bowling League on the first and third Tuesdays of each month. It's great fun and competition, with no special skills required. Join us on January 3 and January 12 at 11:00 AM.
