There’s nothing quite like basking in the warm sun by the pool while reading a good book. However, long periods in the sun, with or without a great read, can result in sunburn, heatstroke and dehydration. And let’s not forget the risk of water damage should your book take an accidental dip. Here are a few tips to ensure a safe and enjoyable read when poolside.
Always have sun protection.
Whether you’re in trunks, a rashguard, or a burkini, be sure to have multiple forms of sun protection so you don’t get sunburned. That means applying SPF 30+ sunscreen every two hours, being near a pool umbrella or shade, and having a hat and sunglasses on hand.
Don’t forget to hydrate.
Even if you’re not sweating or moving much at all, being in the sun is naturally dehydrating. So be sure to have lots of cool water on hand to maintain your hydration. Mayo Clinic recommends drinking 2.7 to 3.7 liters per day. To best avoid dehydration, Cleveland Clinic recommends drinking water before you start feeling thirsty. Try drinking some water every 15 to 20 minutes.
Keep out of the splash zone.
If you’re reading a physical book, it’s best to keep your distance from the pool's edge. This will avoid getting your book soggy if someone cannonballs, or if you doze off and your book decides to take a dive out of your hands. Nothing will ruin your poolside relaxation like your favorite book getting ruined or having to pay damage/replacement fees for a library book.
Stay at least 4 to 6 feet away from the pool’s edge to ensure your books stay dry.
Level up your poolside read with a waterproof book.
We’re not talking about waterproof baby bathtime books. That’s right, there are strategies out there to waterproof your summer reads.
If you have an e-reader or tablet, there are waterproof cases you can get to protect your device, so you don’t have to worry while you read. If you’re looking to invest in a new device, think about waterproof e-readers and tablets that can withstand a splash or accidental dunk in the pool. If you like audiobooks, waterproof headphones or speakers are an excellent way to enjoy your books while having a refreshing dip in the pool.
