Thorndyke Through the Years

Hey Friends,

It's your favorite library bear, Thorndyke.

I start to feel nostalgic in June because it’s graduation month. Graduation is a time of celebration with ceremonies and parties. You or someone you know might be graduating from school.

This time of year makes me think about all the happy memories of being at the library. Now, I’ve been a library bear for a very long time. You might not know this, but in January a long time ago, I was born a Beanie Baby. That makes me a Capricorn! I grew up in Canton, and my family and I visited the library often.

Unlike wild bears, my dream job was to become a library mascot. Luckily, a librarian said CPL was looking for a mascot and that I would be a perfect fit. I have loved being at CPL ever since. My job is to greet patrons of all ages from my bookshelf in the Children’s Library and wear very cool costumes.

I love wearing costumes all year round. I’m a very big bear so my costumes must fit me just right. In June, you’ll see me in a graduation cap and gown. Here are just a few of the many costumes I’ve worn over the years.

Summer is my favorite time of year. The library plans so many fun things for 62 Days of Summer, and I love seeing all the patrons enjoying the events and taking home lots of books.

From time to time, you might think I get bored being at the library all the time. When the library closes, and I have free time, I like to do some of my favorite things, like crafts. The librarians like sharing my craft projects on my very own website feature called Thorndyke’s Portal. Here’s a link to some of the craft projects I’ve recently completed, with help, of course.

You might not know this, but sometimes I go on adventures with the library staff to fun places in the community. Last summer, we explored all sorts of parks and playgrounds in Canton.

I wouldn’t be a bear-y good library mascot if I didn’t love books, but my favorite books are about bears. Sometimes, reading classic books makes me feel nostalgic, too.

The library is a great place to remember good times from the past and to make new memories, too.

Bear Hugs,

Thorndyke
