It is a joy to watch classic films, but it can also be hard work if you want to earn your "film geek" cred.
First, you must decide on what the highly subjective definition of "classic" means to you. Then, you need to make your list of classics that meet that criteria, sort through databases to find them and maybe drive to a location to pick up those films.
If that sounds exhausting, we have some good news for you: with your library card, you have access to two streaming services that take most of the work out of finding and watching classic films.
hoopla
Once you create an account, you can start browsing their collection of movies. With hoopla's Genres and Collections section, you can find titles you didn't even know you were seeking.
We highly recommend the Classic Films collection, where you’ll find movies like Dial M for Murder, The Apartment and Cabaret. The Cult Classics collection is for those looking for quintessential films that are a bit more off the beaten path. It includes movies like Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, Vampire's Kiss and The Secret of N.I.M.H.
You can check out up to 20 items a month with your Canton Public Library card.
Kanopy
Just like with hoopla, once you create an account in Kanopy, you can start browsing through their collection of classics.
The Classic Cinema collection contains sub-groupings for every genre, including thrillers, comedies, horror, science fiction, musicals, romance, adventure and more. Dig deep into film noir with The Third Man, tap your toes with Guys and Dolls or begin your amateur film studies degree with seminal French films like The 400 Blows.
You get 20 tickets to check out movies each month, with most movies costing two tickets.
