Gluten -Free Support Group

Have you wondered why everyone is talking about being "gluten-free" ? Are you starting the journey of being gluten-free or have you been without gluten for a long time? This class/support group is for you. Dr Cynthia Shaft-Toll DC will share health benefits of the gluten-free lifestyle : how and where to shop for gluten-free items, how to and where are the best gluten-free restaurants, how to cook for holidays and special events. Guest speakers also will be presenting at different months. Some sample gluten-free food will be available and we hope for the group to share their best recipes as well.

UofM Family Reading and Science Program I

This program is part of the University of Michigan Museum of Natural History series Predators and Prey: The Eternal Struggle. On Saturday, January 18 from 2:00-3:00 PM, participants aged 6-11 years old (with their caregiver) will explore the world of dinosaurs. Titled Dining on Dinos: Long necks, sharp teeth, club tails, killer claws, participants will learn what fossils tell us about who ate who in the distant past. The world in the time of the dinosaurs was a brutal place. We will explore what fossils can tell us about the lives and coping strategies of predators and prey animals. Registration begins on December 23.

Preschool Storytimes

Preschool storytimes are a fun celebration of story and words designed for children ages 3-5. Children must be able to sit attentively and participate for 30 minutes. Parents may attend, or must remain in the children's department. Storytimes will be held in the purple room starting Monday, January 6 through Friday, February 14. Registration is online and begins Monday, December 23. We welcome you at one of the following sessions:


Due to library renovations we will be closed on February 3 and 4, therefore there will be no Preschool Storytime on February 3. The Children's Library and Purple Room will be closed from Feb 3 through February 15. Remaining Preschool Storytimes are as follows:

Friday, February 7 in Community Room
Monday, February 10 in Community Room WITH Family Storytime participants
Friday, February 14 in Community Room

Traditional Yoga Basics

On Tuesday, January 7 from 4:30-5:15 PM, Thirupu Siva will teach young people from 6-16 years of age the basic asanas, building up to various intermediate poses. Please wear dark, loose fitting clothing and bring a yoga mat to work on. If you have long hair, please tie it back. Registration for this program begins on December 23.

Living Longer and Loving It

The Professional Resource Alliance is back with more great information for our Canton residents.  This panel of local experts will discuss and answer questions regarding issues which affect our senior population.  The topics covered will relate to taxes, estate planning, long term care, home health care and identity theft.  Come armed with questions to this presentation on Tuesday, January 28 at 7:00 PM.

Read with a Dog!

Kids and Tweens in grades K-6, improve your reading skills and make a new friend by reading aloud to a Canine Good Citizen. Sign up begins at 6:25 PM at the Children's Desk and is on a first come, first served basis. Sessions start at 10 minutes per sitting.

Starfish Family Services: Math Learning in the Home

On January 9, from 6:30-8:30 PM, the highly trained staff from Starfish Family Services will present Math Learning in the Home. Participants will learn the importance of math during the preschool years and determine materials from home that may be used to support math learning. Bring your children as free daycare is provided by Starfish's daycare professionals.

Hummingbird Music Together: CANCELLED

On Wednesday, January 8, from 10:00-10:45 AM, you and your child, 0-5 years old, will love playing follow the leader during Follow me Down to Carlow, Counting the Stars while rocking in your arms during Great Big Stars, and thinking up favorite treats from Grandma for “Trot to Grandma’s House." Music Together is an internationally recognized early childhood music program for babies, toddlers, preschoolers, kindergarteners, and the adults who love them. This program will be presented by staff from the Grosse Pointe Music Academy of Canton. This program is taking place during the regularly scheduled Family storytime, in the Community Room.

Open Chess

Join us for informal open play as well as a tournament by the "Library Chess Clubs" on the fourth Sunday of most months in the library Community Room. 18th Annual Jackie Robinson Art, Essay, & Poetry Contest

Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in his debut with the Brooklyn Dodgers on April 15, 1947. To commemorate this milestone in baseball history, the Detroit Tigers are sponsoring the 18th Annual Jackie Robinson Art, Essay and Poetry Contest. This contest is open to middle and high school students from the greater Detroit region. Students may enter the contest by submitting an original work of art, essay, or poem in honor of Jackie Robinson. Entries must be received by 5:00 p.m. Friday, February 28, 2013. Starfish Family Services: CANCELLED

On Tuesday, February 18, from 9:30-11:30 AM, the highly trained staff from Starfish Family Services will present Terrific Twos: Staying a Step Ahead of Conflict.
Participants will learn supportive ideas and interactions, developed specifically for toddlers, that keep conflicts to a minimum when working with this age group. Bring your children as free daycare is provided by Starfish's daycare professionals.

Games Kids Play: Enhancing Language and Literacy Development through Games

Just in time for the holiday gift-giving season, Dr. Lauren Katz and Dr. Joanne Pierson of the Literacy, Language, and Learning Institute (3LI - www.3-li.org) will discuss the role that everyday board and card games, including some of the classics, play in helping children develop language and literacy skills. Drs. Katz and Pierson, speech-language pathologists with advanced degrees in education and a specialty in dyslexia, will highlight games for preschoolers to young adults that the family can enjoy together while supporting and building skills in vocabulary, memory, social language, comprehension, reading, and spelling. So come in on December 11 from 7:00-8:00 PM and get great ideas to round out your holiday shopping list!
