Programs FAQs

  • General Questions

It happens. That program you were all excited about attending is the same night as parent-teacher conferences. Or someone got sick. Or you just got a better offer. Or maybe you just changed your mind. We don't judge. But we would appreciate it if you canceled your registration so that someone from the waitlist can take your spot. It's the courteous thing to do, and it's really easy.

To cancel your registration, look for the confirmation email you received when you registered.

There is a 'Your Registration' section that includes a red 'Cancel Registration' button.

Clicking this button will take you to a confirmation prompt on the events site, just to make sure that you really do want to cancel.

Clicking 'Yes, unregister' will cancel your registration for the event, and display a confirmation message on the same screen.

You will receive an email confirmation that your registration has been canceled.

    CALL US:

If you have any difficulty, or can't find your confirmation email, please call the library at 734-397-0999 ext. 4 and we will walk you through it or we can remove your name from the registration list.

Thanks for being kind and canceling your registration. It helps other people have an opportunity to go to the program and also minimizes waste of program supplies and staff prep time. We appreciate you!

To attend a Zoom program you must first install Zoom on your computer, laptop, or mobile phone from https://zoom.us/. You will typically receive an email from the library with the Zoom link 24 hours before the program starts, though see individual event descriptions for exceptions. Once the program starts, click on the link provided to join the program. Some programs require microphone or camera access in order to participate.

If you've registered for a program with a Grab & Go kit, you can come into the library to collect your kit. Kits are held on a designated shelf next to the Holds, past the self-checkouts on the right as you enter the library. Grab & Go kits are held for you up to the date of the program.

Yes! During the school year we have Family Storytime for ages 0 - 5, Baby Storytime for ages 0 – 24 months, and Preschool Storytime for ages 3 ½ - 5. In the Summer we have Wings of Wonder Storytimes for ages 0-5. Some storytimes are drop-in, and others require registration.

Check out our Programs page to find upcoming storytimes and more information. If no sessions are listed, there are currently no open sessions.

For homework and study assistance for all ages, the library offers HelpNow through Brainfuse, a live, online tutoring service accessible with a CPL library card. For further homework or skill-building assistance, explore our Research and Learn page.

For one-on-one tutoring in-person, you can frequently find tutors who advertise on our lobby bulletin board. Canton Public Library does not endorse or track these tutors. You are welcome to meet with your own tutor here in the library.

National Honor Society Tutors are typically available in the library on a seasonal basis. Check our Program page for current information. If no sessions are listed, this is not currently being offered.

Because the library is a public place, it is not wise for children to be left unattended. For this reason, per library policy:

    • Children, ages 7 and under, must be with a caregiver, age 13 or over, at all times
    • Children, ages 8 –12, a caregiver, age 13 or over, must be in the library with them
    • Children, age 13 and older may be at the library without a caregiver’s supervision

Parents/guardians/caregivers are responsible for their child’s behavior, safety, and welfare while on library grounds regardless of age.

All unattended minors must be picked up at least ten minutes before closing time. If a minor is left after closing time or if a child under the age of 13 is left unattended at the library, the police may be called.

CPL hosts multiple book groups. To see upcoming book group meetings, check our Programs page.

Books are generally selected several months in advance. You can find the list of groups, and the books they are planning to read, partway down the Books & Media page.

The best way to learn about the events, books, and other things you love from CPL is to sign up for our e-mail newsletters.

There is also a listing of upcoming events on the CPL homepage and a filterable list on the Programs page

In the library, we display upcoming events on the screen in the Self Service Center, list events on the whiteboard in the Children's Library, and are happy to answer questions at the Information Desk.

If you are unable to register for a program, please check the following two things.

    1. Has the program opened for registration? Look for the date, as shown here. Attempts to enroll before the registration opens will fail.

      2. Is the program full? You can see how many spots are remaining by checking the program listing. Programs that are full will show as such.

Some programs will be set up with a waitlist. You can add yourself to the waitlist, and if a spot opens up for you, a librarian will contact you.

If you have other questions about registration, please call us at 734-397-0999 or use the Contact Us form.

  • English Language Learner Programs

The goals of the ELL program are to

    • gain fluency and confidence in English as a non-native speaker,
    • meet people and make friends, and
    • help other English Language Learners gain confidence and skills.

    No registration is required.

We meet on Thursdays over Zoom from 10:00-11:00 AM and on Friday mornings 9:30 to 11:00 AM. Please check the Programs page for exact room location and the most up-to-date time information. For more meeting time options, consult the Plymouth Canton Community Literacy Conversation Group list.

The ELL Conversation Group is not formal grammar instruction. Starkweather Academy in Plymouth offers ESL classes. You can also use the Canton Public Library's "Language" database, Mango Languages (requires a Canton Library card). Additionally you can see a Librarian at the Information desk for books and audio English instruction resources.

Preschool age children are welcome at the Conversation Group IF the parent can participate in the discussion. The program is for adults 18 and older. Parents of school age children are encouraged to contact Plymouth-Canton Community Schools or their local school district for ELL support during and between school years. Please refer to the Canton Public Library Patron Code of Conduct for specific information on supervising children.

Only CLC trained (or approved) tutors may act as ELL Conversation Group facilitators. For the next training session, please refer to the CLC web page.

The program is English Language Learners (ELL) because many non-native English speakers have fluency in multiple languages. English could be their second, third or more language learned.

The ELL Reading Group reads aloud together in English to improve vocabulary and comprehension skills. Reading materials are usually short pieces that can be finished and discussed in one meeting. The Reading Group meets every week. Check the Programs page for time and room location.

The ELL Book Club is for non-native speakers who read independently, then meet and discuss in English. Books are read in portions and discussed over a series of several meetings, with time for questions about vocabulary, culture, etc. The group decides how much to read each meeting. The ELL Book Club meets every-other Friday. Please check the Programs page for time and room location.

Any non-native speaker who would like to build their English reading skills is welcome at the Reading Group. Any English-learner who reads independently and fairly fluently is welcome to join the Book Club. If the Reading Group seems too easy, please try the Book Club. If the Book Club discussion is too fast, try the Reading Group. If you’re not sure which one is right for you, you can always ask one of our tutors.
