Have you been bitten by the decluttering bug lately? While it feels great to remove the things that we no longer need or want in our homes, some of the rubbish needs to be disposed of in specific ways.
Home electronics and hazardous waste can be especially tricky. Products such as paint, cleaners, oil, batteries and pesticides can contain hazardous ingredients and require special care when you discard them. Fortunately, Canton Township and Wayne County provide avenues for safe disposal of many hazardous items.
Canton's Hazardous Waste Round-up will be held on Saturday, September 9, 2023 from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM at Canton's Division of Public Works Building (4847 Sheldon Road, just south of Michigan Avenue). This is a great time to declutter and keep the environment safe. For a complete list of items that are accepted (and which ones are not), be sure to review this document.
For non-hazardous items, you can dispose of them close to home by taking advantage of Canton Clean-up days. There are two more scheduled in 2023, on Saturday, September 23 and Saturday, October 28 from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
On Clean-up days, each Canton household is allowed one free trip to drop off items at the GFL Environmental facility at 39000 Van Born Road. All household trash and recycling can be brought to Clean-up dates along with home electronics, household construction debris, latex paint, batteries, yard waste and more. Wayne County residents also have access to the ERG Residential Hazardous Waste Drop-off Center in Livonia. Standard pricing is $.75 per pound with a $20 minimum, but you may be eligible for a free Household Waste Collection Voucher through the Wayne County Department of Public Services. Or, you can go to one of the county’s Household Hazardous Waste Collection events, the last of which is scheduled at Wayne County Community College in Taylor on Saturday, October 21, 2023 from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM.
