Know Your Org: Muslim Community of the Western Suburbs

"Know Your Org" is an informational series designed to spotlight some of the wonderful organizations in our community. This month, we are highlighting the Muslim Community of the Western Suburbs.

The Muslim Community of the Western Suburbs (MCWS), located in Canton, was established in 1977 by a group of parents committed to preserving their children’s Muslim identity and values as they assimilated in the U.S. The group evolved from informal study sessions held in the founders’ homes to become an official nonprofit organization in 1979.

MCWS is a dedicated organization that strives to create and promote a community of peace and caring where its members grow closer to God and, through that closeness, become positive contributors to their families and the community around them.

MCWS is an active supporter of Canton Township governance and collaborates closely with the township and police department to create a safe and nurturing environment for the Canton Muslim community and the broader community. MCWS seeks to promote understanding between various faith groups, interacting with them regularly, and acting as stewards and good neighbors.

They serve as a multifaceted hub, offering religious, educational and social support to strengthen Muslims from Canton, the surrounding communities, and our town at large. Recently, MCWS unveiled a Tech Lab at the Medina Activity Center (MAC), which brings together innovators, builders and problem-solvers to collaborate and grow their ideas.

Ramadan Ongoings

During Ramadan, MCWS offers a rich program of nightly prayers at the MCWS and MAC campuses. Alongside prayer, there are daily Quran and spiritual reflection classes. The center organizes community iftars daily (the breaking of the fast). There are also other talks on religious practice and spiritual growth for youth and college-aged participants.

In addition, they offer special volunteer and social outreach activities to engage the community in acts of charity and service. The month ends with communal Eid prayers, often attended by thousands of people to celebrate the blessing of the month of Ramadan.
