AARP Tax-Aide Locator – The AARP Foundation's TaxAide provides in-person and virtual tax assistance free of charge, with a special focus on taxpayers over 50 or with low-to-moderate income. TaxAide volunteers are located nationwide and are trained and IRS-certified every year.
Please note that AARP volunteers are no longer offering tax services at Canton Township. To better serve their clients, they are consolidating their tax preparation sites to offer a wider range of expertise at each location. Call 1-888-687-2277 or visit AARP for more information.
Accounting Aid Society – No-cost tax preparation services are available for households making less than $69,000 a year at sites throughout Detroit, Wayne County and the metro area. Services are provided through the IRS’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.
Call 313-556-1920 or go online to see if you qualify and schedule an appointment. Appointments are not required but are strongly preferred. To prepare for your appointment, be sure to bring the necessary documentation. Here are the sites for 2026.
IRS Tax Return Preparation for Qualifying Taxpayers – The IRS's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) programs offer free basic tax return preparation to qualified individuals.
VITA sites offer free tax help to people who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns, including:
- Individuals who generally make $67,000 or less.
- Persons with disabilities.
- Limited English-speaking taxpayers.
In addition to VITA, the TCE program offers free tax help, particularly for those 60 years of age and older. It specializes in questions about pensions and retirement-related issues unique to seniors.

United Way of Southeast Michigan – Refer to the United Way website to find out if you qualify for free assistance, find answers to your common tax questions, and take advantage of easy appointment scheduling with IRS-certified tax experts at Accounting Aid Society and Wayne Metro.
Wayne Metropolitan Community Action Agency – Wayne Metro provides free tax preparation services to residents of Wayne County and surrounding communities with an annual income of up to $69,000. Online self-preparation tax services are available to individuals with income of up to $84,000. Call 313-388-9799 or go online to schedule an appointment.
