A Treasury of Field Recordings

A Treasury of Field Recordings from the Library of Congress is a collection of recordings. These recordings have been collected since 1928. They include folk songs from all across America. The ones from the back roads in the Delta are examples of the precursors of the Blues. It is a great historic record of American music.

Baby Boomers & Technology

Baby Boomers respond differently to new technology according to a recent report from Microsoft/AARP. They believe technology can be used to improve health care and fitness, going to demand simpler devices that are safer and easier to use, and they will be a big factor in the adoption of e-readers, recognizing that electronic devices let you carry a lot more reading material and view it in a way that is comfortable.

The Quiltmakers

Eight workshops from the world's best quilt makers offers a unique opportunity to take classes without leaving home. The book Quiltmakers covers a wide range of quiltmaking skills like perfect piecing, applique, template making, adding straight and mitred borders and quilting. Each chapter gives a step-by-step instruction to the project.

Library Circulation Hits 2 Million Mark

The Canton Public Library has hit an all-time high in circulation, reaching our 2 millionth checkout of the year. That's an average of 23 items checked out per Canton resident. These economic times have spurred a 12% increase in library usage over last year, in which we also saw increased use. Our DVDs, books, CDs and video games continue to be popular items, we see many people using our computers or our Wi-fi to connect to the Internet and taking advantage of our databases and other electronic resources.

Our thanks to the Canton community for helping us reach this milestone. We look forward to serving you in 2010.

Thorndyke Thoughts

Hey Kids!!!
SANTA CAME!!!! And you know what? He brought me a little buddy! Which is, in fact, what his name is! Little Buddy, or LB for short. I've been having so much fun with my new friend! Now I have someone that I can play games with when the library is closed! The best part is that LB is travel-sized. That means that he can sneak into people's suitcases and go on vacation with them. I never get to go anywhere, so I am excited to see where LB ends up going!
I hope you and yours had a nice holiday too. Did you get anything? What did you do? Can't wait to hear all about it! Until next time!
Bear Hugs!

P.S. Here's a picture of LB! Better get used to him, because you might be seeing him a lot!

Terry Pratchett's Nation Dramatized

In October the UK's Guardian hosted a contest for young readers to turn Terry Pratchett's Nation into a dramatization. The winners have just been announced. I couldn't help thinking that more books should be made into movies by fans... especially because these homemade films are amazing. Take a look at the winners and get the low down on this unusual contest.

Thorndyke Thoughts

Hey Kids!
I'm sooo excited that tomorrow is Christmas Eve!  I bet you all are too!  Did you know that Santa Claus visits the library?  Yup!  He does! It's because I'm such a nice bear. As you can tell from the picture--he's been coming for a long time.  It's a picture of me waiting for Santa way back before the Children's Library was expanded!  The hard part is the waiting, and it will be extra hard tomorrow because the library will be closed--so I won't have all of you to keep me busy until he gets here!
When Santa comes to the library, he lands on the roof of the library and slides down into our fireplace, just like he does at your house!  I made sure Miss Kristen bought extra cookies so that we'd have some for Santa. Because I'm a bear, I don't have to be asleep when Santa comes, so we chat a little bit, and I make him some Coffee to help him warm up and wake up!  If you were flying all day delivering presents--you'd need coffee too!  And sometimes I let him check out a book or two.  Since he's Santa he doesn't have to pay overdue fines if he doesn't return them until next Christmas.
I can't wait to see what Santa brings this year.  I wrote a letter asking for a friend, because I get lonely at the library by myself.  Plus, there aren't enough bears here in Canton.  What did you ask Santa to bring you?  I'd love to know--reply to my blog!   Merry Christmas!
Bear Hugs!

Happy Birthday Jane Austen!

Celebrate Jane Austen's birthday on December 16. You might think that there's nothing new with Austen, since she's been dead for almost 200 years, and sure enough, her collection of classics hasn't grown much lately. But there have been a slew of spin-offs, add-ons, continuations and re-tellings, and you can explore some of them on the shelves at CPL. Keep an eye out for a new version of Emma coming to Masterpiece in January, and while you wait, check our shelves for other Austen movies!

Dreaming of a warm climate and place to visit?  You can soak up the sunshine in Maui, Oahu & the big Island in Hawaii.  The Waikiki beach is a great beach to surf or just enjoy the white sand shores.  The fresh, floral air energizes you. The warm, tranquil waters refresh you.

My Favorite Christmas Story

For a long time my favorite Christmas book was The Best Christmas Pageant Ever by Barbara Robinson.  I love the wild and outrageous Herdman family who discovers the Christmas story for the first time.  This is a wickedly humorous, but touching story that has stayed with me since the first time I read it many years ago.  But last year, I read a book that may take that top spot of Christmas favorite.  The Shepherd, the Angel, and Walter the Christmas Miracle Dog by Dave Barry had me laughing until I cried.  On Christmas Eve, the Barnes family experiences the startling loss of the beloved family dog.  But Doug and his father pull off a Christmas miracle - of sorts - just in time for the Christmas pageant.
