Find Your New Best Friend This Month

Our pets are our family members. Celebrate furry friends by learning about our local organizations that rescue and foster animals. Maybe you have space in your heart and in your home to adopt or foster, or time to volunteer. Many organizations also have donation opportunities, like connecting through a Kroger Community Rewards account. Also, many local rescues feature their available pets on Petfinder.

Check out these local organizations that make a difference in the lives of animals.

The Michigan Humane Society is a nonprofit that operates out of southeastern Michigan. They have adoption centers in Westland, Detroit and Sterling Heights, as well as veterinary centers in Westland, Detroit, Rochester Hills and Howell.

GreytHounds of Eastern Michigan (GEM) is a foster-based greyhound adoption organization. They welcome greyhounds from the racetrack into the homes of their foster families, and then out to "furever" homes. Along the way, they teach retired racing greyhounds what it means to be part of a family and living in a home. Many of their dogs also participate in The Greyhound Inmate Experience (TGIE), where greyhounds are socialized, trained and cared for in a prison environment by incarcerated dog handlers. GEM has opportunities for adoption, volunteering and donations, including those through Kroger Community Rewards.

Humane Society of Huron Valley is a nonprofit based in Ann Arbor that cares for a variety of animals including cats, dogs, rabbits and horses. They offer a vet clinic and a cat café, too.

Last Day Dog Rescue is a no-kill rescue based in Livonia with foster homes all across Michigan. They pride themselves on the principle that all life is precious, regardless of breed, appearance, or age. They have adoptable dogs, puppies, cats and kittens. Last Day Dog Rescue has many volunteer opportunities, including dog walking, animal transportation, administrative and social media roles, photography and event help. They participate in Kroger Community Rewards, Goodsearch and iGive.

They accept donations and have a wide variety of volunteer opportunities, including rabbit feeding, habitat cleaning, rabbit grooming and fundraising. They also participate in Kroger Community Rewards.
