Off the Beaten Path: Things to Do to Wrap Up Your Summer

Michigan has a long history of making summer memories across the generations, from young to old. Many of these events, locations and activities are well known, but for a refresher, take a look at our One Tank Trips blog, which still very much applies to this summer.

However, sometimes it’s nice to get away from the crowds and create a unique story to share with friends and family after summer winds down. Here are a few nearby options to create a one-of-a-kind summer memory.

Animal Experiences

Great Lakes Serpentarium, located in Westland, offers the chance to get up close and personal with a variety of reptiles, including snakes, tortoises and alligators. The facility features guided hands-on opportunities. They are open every afternoon (except Tuesdays and Thursdays) with educational programs to explore.

Ann Arbor’s Creature Conservancy allows people to get close to animals that they would rarely get a chance to see. This nonprofit wildlife conservation center houses rescued exotic animals and injured wildlife, including sloths, armadillos and cougars.

They are only open to the public on weekends, with hourly educational programs and a steady stream of exotic pet rescues. The ever-changing lineup is a great reason to make multiple visits.

If exotic animals are a bit too much for you or your family, Domino's Farms Petting Farm has you covered, although there is a small chance you might see a bison roaming across the street. This 20-acre nonprofit farm allows visitors to interact with and feed domestic animals, including alpacas, sheep, goats and cattle.

Open every day at a budget-friendly price, this could be the pick for families, especially if there are younger children in your group.

Arts & Crafts

The Village Arts Factory, located in Cherry Hill Village, is the closest hub for all things creative. While not exactly off the beaten path, many places within this beautiful cultural center are free to enter and explore, making it well worth a visit. Plus, there is always something new to see. They have plenty to offer to people of any age, skill or interest.

Motawi Tileworks is a nationally renowned art pottery studio located in Ann Arbor. The most popular section is the Boneyard, where discontinued or imperfect samples can be purchased at a reduced price. Friday tours show how the pottery is made (online booking only) while workshops let you try making it yourself.

Canton Historical Society offers a trifecta of places to learn more about Canton's history. Step back 150 years while exploring a beautifully preserved one-room schoolhouse, a pole barn farm and a restored farmhouse. Hours are subject to change; check their website for events

The Great Outdoors

While Heritage Park is well known, don’t miss the Heritage Park Story Trail, an interactive reading adventure. The trail begins on the paved path just west of the Canton Public Library. While looping around a pond, you’ll find each page of a story creating adventure around every corner.

One doesn’t need to leave the Canton town limits to go off the grid. Zibiwés Nature Area is great for birding and walking, plus there’s a high chance that not many other people will be around.

The best time to visit this trail is August, when the views are beautiful, and the variety of bird life is abundant—just beware of ticks, mud and wet areas. Applying bug repellent and avoiding the trail after rain are advised.

For a hidden gem to explore in the city of Detroit, check out The Canal District, nicknamed “Little Venice.” The best way to experience the views is from the water. Detroit River Sports offers a 2-hour kayak tour through the hidden canals. There’s plenty to do outside of the water as well, such as seeing what Detroit looked like 100 years ago.

Enjoy the Summer

As the sun begins to set on another beautiful Michigan summer, there is still plenty of time to find adventure right in our own backyard. Exploring these lesser-known treasures is a perfect way to discover something new while creating lasting memories.
