Thorndyke’s Portal to Granny Crafts

Hey Kids,

After the excitement of the week, ol’ Thorndyke likes to stay indoors to recharge. When I’m looking to keep my paws busy inside, I enjoy doing crafts. Crafting is a great way to unplug and have fun.

Creativebug offers a wide range of fun tutorials for various crafts. It's available for free to all Canton Public Library cardholders. You just need to sign in with your library card number and PIN, set a password for your new Creativebug account, and you’re good to go.

One trend that’s been popular lately is granny crafts. Now, don’t let that term scare you, friends. "Granny" is a positive term that makes you feel warm and cozy, like snuggling up with a handmade blanket from grandma.

From embroidery to crochet and even baking, these “old-fashioned” hobbies are becoming more popular with kids and teens these days. In fact, getting creative can put you in a better mood and help with feelings of stress and anxiety.

If you’re looking for a craft that’s easy for everyone, I recommend trying crochet. Creativebug has a tutorial on how to crochet a cute Strawberry Granny Square.

Strawberries not your thing? You can try this Crochet Sampler class. Over 30 days, you'll learn how to crochet and create 20 different types of stitches, which you can use in all sorts of other fun projects.

If learning how to crochet sounds scary, try something small instead, like embroidery. With an adult’s help, you can make your drawings last longer by embroidering the art on a pillow.
