Hey Kids,
Lately, I’ve been spending a lot of time on Creativebug, a database on our website that has many fun arts and crafts activities that you can do at home with your whole family this summer. The good news is that you can use your Canton Public Library card (you just need to create a password) to login for free!
One such activity, which would be a great way to celebrate these summer nights with the whole family, would be to make galaxy slime together. Be prepared, this is a very hands-on craft that perhaps could get a little messy, which in my book makes it even more enjoyable.
You can use this link to see visual step-by-step instructions if you would like to watch the instructor make the galaxy slime first. For my very adventurous friends who want to try making this galaxy slime all on their own without the video, I put the instructions below. Have lots of fun making this sparkly slime as a family!
Enjoy!
Your friend,
Thorndyke
Materials
- 3 bottles of clear Elmer’s glue
- Purex Sta-Flo liquid starch
- Fine pigments or cosmetic-grade mica powder, Creativebug recommends Vitory brand. For the purposes of this activity, we recommend three different colors like blue, pink and black.
- Fine glitter in shades of the colors mentioned above
- Three bowls
- Mixing spoons
Instructions
- Start by emptying one bottle of clear glue into one of the bowls. Do this for all three bowls.
- In the first bowl, put in a teaspoon of your first color of mica powder or pigment. Then add half a teaspoon of each matching shade of glitters. Then start mixing them together with the mixing spoon. Feel free to add a little more mica powder or pigment if you would like the color of your slime to really “pop.”
- After the initial stirring of the mica powder or pigment with the glitter, start adding the liquid starch, 2 teaspoons at a time, in the beginning stretch. Continue to stir and slowly add more and more liquid starch. You want the slime to reach a point where it’s not sticky and you can start kneading it together with your hands. Once you reach the point where you can start kneading it with your hands, add 1 teaspoon at a time until the slime reaches the density that you desire.
- Follow these steps for your second and third bowl with their respective colors, giving each respective slime time to briefly sit.
- After the three individual slimes are good to go, here comes the fun part, combining those different colors all together! It will work best to divide the slime in each bowl in half and then put those three halves together. Take the other half from each bowl and do it again to make even more slime. That way, each combination will be of a reasonable size.
Tips
- Clean up with warm water and a sponge. Soak the bowls for a bit to get all the slime out of them.
- Make sure to store the slime in a Tupperware container, keeping it entirely covered so it doesn’t dry out with time.
