Storytime: Potatoes

Did you miss storytime? Perhaps it is just one of those days when you need a little boost with your little ones. Fret not. We have gathered some storytime resources for you at home, thanks to our librarians. Follow our steps below or mix and match for the ultimate storytime experience.

Today's Theme: Potatoes

1. Energize with a Song

Sing "Glad You’re Here Today" (sung to the tune of “The Farmer In The Dell”).

I’m glad you’re here today,

I’m glad you’re here today,

Let’s wave hello to everyone (wave to each other),

I’m glad you’re here today.

2. Read a Book About Potatoes

Potatoes in a storytime? You bet your boots! These silly spuds are rolling into town with laughs, adventure, and maybe even ketchup. Check out these books for a totally tuber-tastic time.

3. Activity: Potato-Almond Flour Playdough

Soft, squishy fun you can make in minutes. This playdough is taste-safe and gluten-free.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup instant mashed potato flakes
  • ½ cup almond flour
  • ¾ to 1 cup warm water
  • Food coloring (optional, but recommended for maximum fun!)

Instructions:

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine the potato flakes and almond flour.
  2. In a separate cup, mix a few drops of food coloring into ¾ cup warm water.
  3. Gradually stir the colored water into the dry mix, adding more water a little at a time until a soft dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough well by hand (or with a dough hook). It will become more cohesive the longer you knead.
  5. Adjust as needed:
    • If too sticky: add a sprinkle of almond flour or flakes.
    • If too dry: add a few teaspoons of warm water.

Notes:

  • The dough won’t be as elastic as traditional playdough (no gluten!), but it should be soft, smooth and moldable.
  • It will be a bit more delicate—perfect for sensory play, not for detailed sculpting.

4. Sing a Goodbye Song

See you next time! Wrap up your storytime and sing along with our librarians to "Skinnamarink."
