Storytime: Disability Pride Month

Did you miss storytime? Perhaps it is just one of those days when you need a little boost with your little ones. Fret not. We have gathered some storytime resources for you at home. Follow our steps below or mix-and-match for the ultimate storytime experience.

Today’s Theme: Disability Pride Month

1. Energize with a Song

Start your storytime by singing “The More We Get Together."

The more we get together,
Together, together,
The more we get together,
The happier we'll be.

For your friends are my friends
And my friends are your friends.
The more we get together,
The happier we'll be.

To add movements to the song, point to yourself when singing “my friends,” and point to someone else when singing “your friends.”

2. Read a Book

Disability Pride Month happens every July to celebrate people with disabilities and the important contributions they make to the world. It’s a time to raise awareness and to help others understand that people with disabilities should be accepted, included and respected. We celebrate it to remember that differences make us special, and everyone deserves to be treated with kindness and fairness.

3. Activity: "All About Me" Tactile Portrait

Gather your supplies: paper, glue, yarn, buttons, textured paper, fabric scraps, and markers.

Instructions:

  1. Have your child create a self-portrait using a variety of textures and materials.
  2. Encourage them to include details that make them unique—glasses, a wheelchair, a hearing aid, skin tone, hair, favorite clothes and more.
  3. Use this activity as a springboard to talk about how everyone's body and experiences are different—and how those differences are something to be proud of!

4. Sing a Goodbye Song

See you next time! Wrap up your storytime and sing along with our librarians to "Skinnamarink."
