STEAM: Recycled Fashion

It’s happened. You have ripped your favorite jeans and can’t wear them anymore. You don’t want to throw them out, but what on earth will you do with them? Have no fear. In this installment of STEAM, we will highlight ways to recycle your clothes into new, fantastic items.

HGTV, home of all things crafty, has this great post on upcycling your clothes into new decorations and other surprises. The denim wreath highlighted on the page is really pretty, and the directions are just a click away. Other suggestions include a t-shirt cat hideaway, a no-sew sock bunny and a cozy sweater pet bed.

The Canton Public Library also has books on making crafts out of recycled clothing. One title in our collection is Refashion, Restyle, Restitch by Debbie Shore. In this book, you will find directions for over 20 different projects that use clothes or recycled materials you have in your house already.

Another fantastic resource from CPL is access to Creativebug. You can take a step-by-step class just by creating a free account using your Canton Public Library card and adding a password. By using the search term “upcycle,” you can choose from a variety of classes that will help you update and recreate your wardrobe, all with clothes you have in your closet.

Maybe you have an overabundance of old t-shirts. The blog One Crazy House has a great post on 16 Cool Things You Can Make from Old T-Shirts. Some of their fun crafts include making superhero capes for kids, creating skirts from t-shirts, a t-shirt blanket and fun t-shirt bracelets.

The Boondocks blog has some out-of-the-box ideas for repurposing your old clothes. They have projects that include re-covering a chair, lining a wooden box or creating wall art. Everything from flannel chair covers to themed wreaths is covered in their crafty post.

So don’t ditch those ripped jeans or old t-shirts! Have fun upcycling them into new items and giving them a second chance at life.
