Stop reading this.
Right now.
…
You’re still reading.
Sigh.
We see you’re one of those. Someone who doesn’t follow directions. A nonconformist. Well, that might actually serve you well.
There’s growing evidence that many people are addicted to their devices (see studies by Common Sense Media and BMC Psychology). Smartphones and other screens, like the one you are on now, are integral to our lives.
But, according to the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychology, too much screen time can actually cause irregular sleep patterns, obesity, behavior problems and impaired academic performance. In other words, it does us good to take a break from our screens every now and again.
So, why not come to the library for a screen-free spree?
Here are several things you could do:
- Attend one of our many library programs.
- Put on a puppet show using our stage, or check out a puppet to take home.
- Meet with some friends in our Co-Lab or a study room to play a board game, play D&D or just socialize.
- Check out a Michigan Activity Pass, which offers free access to hundreds of parks, museums, theaters and more across the state.
- Check out a storytime kit and create your own storytime. Kits include a book, a selection of rhymes, a puppet and a CD.
- Visit Heritage Park next door and read a story along a trail.
- Find a book that teaches you something new. For instance, you could knit an animal friend, make a cardboard airplane or build a robot out of LEGOs.
- Play with our giant Everbright light boards or color in our Children’s Library.
- Read alone in a comfy chair or together as a family—check out some of our librarians' favorite read-aloud stories.
So, what are you waiting for? Now, stop reading this article (we won’t tell anyone you followed the rules). Get away from your screen and come to the library!
