Everybody loves a good park, right? They provide safe spaces to connect, enjoy the outdoors, learn about nature and be physically active. Canton has some excellent parks—thanks to our talented friends at Canton Leisure Services (CLS)—so if you’re looking for a place to spend some time outdoors while the weather is nice, look no further.
Looking at this map, Canton has numerous parks and other public facilities. All Canton parks are open from 6:00 AM-10:00 PM, have public parking and walking paths, and, aside from Preservation Park, they all include a playground and space for athletic activities in one form or another.
All parks have free admission though certain amenities such as pavilions or athletic fields can be reserved for a fee. Skateboarding is not allowed at any Canton parks.
Heritage Park – Athletic amenities include a baseball/softball diamond and a sand volleyball court—even hammocks in the spring and summer. Picnic tables are available and pavilions can be rented here, though the pavilions at Heritage Park South are currently under repair and are unavailable. Public restrooms are available.
Freedom Park – Athletic amenities include basketball courts, a disc golf course, horseshoe pits, an inline skating rink, a volleyball court, and pickleball courts. Pavilions can be rented.
Independence Park – Athletic amenities include a soccer field and public restrooms are available.
Kopper Park – This park consists entirely of one very nice playground.
Preservation Park – Adjacent to the Village Square, the Cherry Hill School House, and the Village Theater at Cherry Hill, this park hosts the Canton Farmers Market during its regular season.
Griffin Park – Athletic amenities include a baseball/softball diamond, basketball courts, and a tennis court.
Flodin Park – Athletic amenities include a baseball/softball diamond, a basketball court, and tennis courts.
Barchester Park – Athletic amenities include an inline skating rink and there are nature trails as well as standard walking paths.
Victory Park – Athletic amenities include a baseball/softball diamond and pavilions which can be rented. Public restrooms are available.
Parks that do not feature public restrooms may have port-a-potties available, but no permanent structures. Many of the playgrounds now include non-verbal communication boards, with the most recent scheduled to be installed during summer 2024 at Heritage Park North and Freedom Park. For more park improvements, upcoming and ongoing, see the CLS website.
If you’re looking for outdoor exercise, or just a great way to appreciate nature, why not take a hike? Canton Leisure Services maintains two excellent nature trails: the Fellows Creek Nature Trail, which connects Griffin Park and Flodin Park, and the Lower Rouge River Trail, which runs along the lower Rouge River between Canton Center Rd and Lotz Rd.
The I-275 Metro trail and the ITC Corridor Trail are not maintained by CLS but are still excellent nature trails well worth a visit. There is ample parking at either end of the trails and they are open from 6:00 AM-10:00 PM. For more information, check out our hiking blog.
