It might not seem like it, but now is the perfect time to plan a summer vacation at a state park. “Is that allowed?” you ask. “It’s way too early.” Well, if department stores can jump seasons by selling you snow globes in October, why can’t you? Jump seasons, that is. Not sell snow globes.
Plus, if you’re looking to go to a Michigan State Park on a popular holiday weekend, it’s best to book as soon as possible.
Day-use sites can be reserved a year in advance, but the Michigan DNR opens camping and lodging reservations six months ahead of time, and they fill up quickly. Mark your calendar, and research campgrounds the night before reservations open to make sure you can quickly claim the site you want before it's taken.
Aim for one near amenities or with a beautiful view. If everything seems hopeless, consider trying for a Sunday, Monday or Tuesday arrival instead of a Friday or Saturday. Don’t forget to look for local festivals or events going on in the area.

See if your destination is part of the Michigan Activity Pass (MAP) program to get discounts on the park, and find other museums and cultural attractions to round out your vacation. Check out campmichigan.org for even more campground reservation tips.
Here’s hoping that six months from now, you are enjoying a relaxing summer vacation in a beautiful, natural habitat. And don’t worry, you don’t have to plan your winter vacation while you’re there. You can just enjoy it.
