Back-to-School Savings with the Library

Our library calculator is a nifty tool that demonstrates how valuable your library card and your library itself can potentially be. Using this calculator as a reference, we highlight how educators and students can get the most out of our services here at the Canton Public Library.

Physical Items

The public library is an excellent companion to your school library, as both are wonderful places to get started on any project or to simply read for fun. For checkout, we have many fiction classics covered in schools, as well as nonfiction books—anything from study guides to research materials.

Educational DVDs, which include practice lessons and exercises for a variety of school subjects, can be found alongside books in the nonfiction aisles.

If a particular item is needed for a research project and CPL does not have it on our shelves, we can assist you with requesting it from another Michigan library through the Michigan Electronic Library (MeL).

Digital Resources

Your library card gives you access to an array of apps and e-resources that can be very helpful for research assignments. Public libraries pay to give their patrons complementary access to things like article databases, newspaper archives and online encyclopedias. These premium services and more can all be accessed while on our Wi-Fi or from elsewhere with a valid library card.

As far as apps go, Libby, Kanopy and hoopla contain valuable educational content. For instance, both Kanopy and hoopla have many episodes of The Great Courses, a well-regarded series of educational videos and audiobooks covering a variety of subjects. And with Mango Languages, you have a free, interactive resource for learning over 70 languages.

Patrons may find educational value in the passes offered by the Michigan Activity Pass program, which allows patrons to save money on admission to many local museums and parks. For example, visiting one of the nature preserves at Metro Parks can be an enriching and informative experience.

In-Person Services

CPL’s physical space can save you money in unexpected ways. Wi-Fi, for instance, can seem like a given in most places. Unlike cafes or other public spaces, though, the library’s Wi-Fi does not require a password or day pass to use. Neither do the dozens of publicly accessible computers that can be used for research, as well as low-cost printing.

Quiet, public study areas can come at a premium. Here at CPL, we continue to make use of our space to secure as much study area as possible, which includes our many group study rooms, the quiet study room, the Co-Lab, and so many other spots to sit and get work done. Our rooms are not reservable, so our advice is to get here as early as possible and to bring a friend for extended, uninterrupted homework sessions.

If you are looking for homework help during the school year, there is a good chance that tutors from the local honors society may be available on certain days of the week to assist through our partnership program with them. Outside of those times, you can take advantage of HelpNow by Brainfuse, an online homework help platform you can access with your library card.
