Adult Librarian (part time) Under the management of the Information Services Department Head, the Librarian is responsible for providing reference, readers’ advisory, roving, programming, and collection development services to the public. The nature of the work requires daytime, evening, and weekend hours.

Individuals employed as part time Librarians are paid bi-weekly and are classified as non-exempt from overtime under FLSA guidelines.
Page I Under the supervision of the Circulation Services Department Head, the Page is responsible for accurate and efficient check in, re-shelving, and retrieval of library materials. The Page may assist other staff to perform clerical duties associated with managing the hold shelf and processing circulation notices and assisting library patrons as necessary. Due to the varied responsibilities, this position is differentiated by grade, based on job functions. This position is classified as a regular part-time position and is non-exempt from overtime. The nature of the work requires evening and weekend hours.

Friends of the Library

Our Friends participate in fundraising and assisting with the special library events they sponsor (Patron Celebration Day, book and author luncheons, etc.)

Book Crew Group

Book Crew Volunteers work two-hour shifts in the Secondhand Prose Used Bookshop, located next to the Internet Lab, by the magazines.

Service Volunteers

Our Service Volunteers are a very special group of people who donate their time to help us keep the library running smoothly and efficiently. Their volunteer assignments may range from cutting scrap paper, dusting library shelves or watering plants to shelving, processing library materials or withdrawing items from the database. Library Service Volunteers must be at least (14) years old.

How to Volunteer

When volunteer positions are available, they are posted here. At that time, you can print out a Volunteer Application and return it to the Reception Desk. We do not keep volunteer applications on file, nor do we accept unsolicited applications. Please refer to the CPL Volunteer Program Code of Conduct for details/restrictions. Those in need of immediate community service hours can contact PBJ Outreach or the Society of St. Vincent de Paul at 313-393-2936.

Volunteer Opportunity Essential Duties
Now Accepting Applications for Technical Processing Volunteer

POSITION SUMMARY
Adult or teen assists Technical Processing staff in a variety of support functions

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES*

  • Review music CDs, DVDs and/or BCDs for repair or replacement
  • Tape edges on paperback books
  • Repair binding, torn pages and any other normal wear found on damaged books
  • Replace damaged cases for audio-visual materials
  • Apply RFID tags to new collection acquisitions
  • Remove item records of withdrawn materials from program database

SECONDARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Additional projects and repairs as assigned by supervisor

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS

  • Attentiveness to detail
  • Neatness (in printing/writing/cutting etc.)
  • Accuracy
  • Familiar (and comfortable) with personal computing applications
  • Volunteer should be self-motivated and a fast learner, with the ability to work with minimal supervision after training

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Ability to visually distinguish among various audio-visual items
  • Manual dexterity
  • Ability to understand spoken instruction and to communicate clearly with supervisor

NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Ability to lift and carry 10-25 lb. boxes if necessary

SCHEDULE

  • At least one (1) one- or two-hour shift weekly
  • Weekday shifts only (Monday through Friday)
  • Shifts between the hours 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM
