Here Comes the Sun: Bright Outside Until Bedtime

Here Comes the Sun

“Sun, sun, sun, here it comes."

– “Here Comes the Sun” by The Beatles

Bad news for vampires, but good news for the rest of us: days are getting longer. In fact, in July, the sun will set about 4 hours later than it does in December. But how can we make the most of that extra time as a family? Maybe the answer can be found in some “sun” song lyrics.

Go for a Walk

“I'm walking on sunshine, woooah
And don't it feel good.”

– “Walking on Sunshine” by Katrina and The Waves

Go for a family walk after dinner. Not only will it help you digest your food, but according to Harvard Health, a walk outside reduces cortisol, the hormone responsible for stress.

Beverages on the Patio

“Love is the shadow that ripens the wine.”

– “Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun” by Pink Floyd

After dinner, instead of watching TV, have the adults bring their coffee or tea to the patio, while kids can bring along a smoothie, juice or another favorite beverage. Keep the conversation going and enjoy the warmth.

Go for a Swim

“When you're on a golden sea
You don't need no memory.”

– “Island in the Sun” by Weezer

Take a drive to a lake and go for a swim. Watch the sun set on the water and enjoy some all-ages exercise that’s easy on the joints.

Invite Friends Over

“Oh, Saturday Sun
I met some.”

– “Saturday Sun” by Nick Drake

Invite some friends over for a picnic in your backyard. Play some Frisbee or board games outside after dinner. Keep the party going with a fire pit when it gets dark.

Sunset Yoga

“Summer stretching on the grass.”

– “Staring at the Sun” by U2

Yoga is a great way to stretch and relax at the end of the day. Gather the kids and try it outside, with your feet in the grass, using this sunset routine from Move With Nicole.

Take Photos

“All my pictures seem to fade to black and white.”

– “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me” by Elton John

After dinner, take a trip to the park and take photos of nature as the light changes. See what birds or plants you and the kiddos can identify.

Whatever you choose to do this summer to take advantage of the extra sunshine, make sure to do it with a song in your heart.
