Keeping Cool with Kids

The hottest things in the universe:

  • Earth’s core (6,000 degrees Celsius)
  • Sun’s core (15 million degrees Celsius)
  • Quasar 3C273 (40 trillion degrees Celsius)
  • You and your kids (50 gazillion utterances of “It’s too hot to do anything!”)

Don’t let this be you and your family this summer. Here are some ways you can keep cool and have fun at the same time.

A Cold Treat

You don’t need a machine to make no-churn ice cream! Try a recipe from Handle the Heat or make popsicles with a recipe from Country Living.

Water Play

Go swimming, have a water balloon fight, or set up a water obstacle course in your backyard. Run through a sprinkler, go down a slide into a pool, or carry cups of water as fast as you can.

Stay Indoors

Sometimes the best way to beat the heat is with air conditioning. Have an indoor picnic on the floor, go to the movies, attend storytime at the library, or visit a museum with a Michigan Activity Pass.

Icey Crafts

Why not do a craft with cold materials? Try this ice cube painting activity from Busy Toddler or this sponge bomb craft from Endlessly Inspired.

Freezer Hacks

Did you know you can chill your pillowcase by putting it in a plastic bag and popping it into the freezer for 15 minutes before bed? You can do the same with your socks or t-shirts during the day, too.

Here’s hoping you can at least keep cooler than the core of the sun this summer and have fun while doing it!
