Storytime @ Home!

With colder weather coming fast and more holiday vacations in sight, it's always great to think about activites you can do indoors with young children. One easy and economical idea is creating your own at-home storytimes. I've gotten some great ideas from Pam Schiller and the library has many of her books and CDs available for check-out. My favorite is The Complete Book of Activities, Games, Stories, Props, Recipes, and Dances for Preschoolers!

John Fogerty

John Fogerty's rockabilly style returns with The Blue Ridge Rangers Rides Again. This CD, released in 2009, features accompanying musicians Bruce Springsteen, Don Henley and Timothy B. Schmit. This CD is a follow up to the Blue Ridge Rangers album that was released in 1973 after the breakup of Creedence Clearwater Revival.  Check out this cd and other John Fogerty CDs at the Canton Public Library.

Think Rational! CD Now Available at CPL

I'm old. I admit it. I remember WKNR (Keener 13) and I remember Swingin' Time with Robin Seymour and best of all, I remember Scott Morgan and the Rationals. The Rationals were IT, as far as garage bands went in Dee-troit City in the mid to late '60s. They did a cover of Otis Redding's Respect that landed on the Billboard top 100 long before Aretha Franklin ripped its head off. It's here on Think Rational!, a 2-CD retrospective of the whole Rationals oeuvre. I Need You is here, too, and Gloria and over 30 more examples of the kind of rockin' R&B Detroit was serving up while the Beatles ruled the rest of the world.

Native American Flute Music

Recently, I discovered the beauty of Native American flute music. The flute has a very serene and soothing sound. I particularly enjoy the one and two flute sounds of R. Carlos Nakai's music. If you are interested in listening to more Native American music check out our catalog.

Weird Al, Accordionist and...Author?

Weird AlWeird Al Yankovic is the latest celebrity to snag a deal to write a picture book. His book will be published in 2011 and will feature an eight-year-old protagonist who fantasizes about the unusual careers he wants to pursue when he grows up.

“I’ve always wanted to write children's books,” said Yankovic. “And now, it’s not only a goal, it’s a contractual obligation.”

Since it'll be awhile before the book is published, why not check out some of Weird Al's music in the meantime?

You might be able to help us save some of your tax dollars by allowing us to put your email address in your patron record. We won’t send you anything except circulation notices — the item you put on hold is ready to be picked up, the library materials you have out will be due back in two days, reminders of materials you haven’t returned yet — that we would otherwise have to send by printed notices or telephone message. In fact, our “courtesy notices”, those messages we send two days before your items are due back to the library, can only be sent by email — and you’re missing out (and possibly paying overdue fines) if we don’t have your email address. Using email to contact you is also GREEN! We won’t be using paper or postage if we can contact you by email. Just stop at the Checkout Desk and give a staff member your email address, and if you don’t have an email address, ask a librarian at the Reference Desk how you can get started.

Jacques Loussier Plays Bach

This is the 50th Anniversary Recording for this trio. This CD is a mix of Jazz and Bach. It includes two tracks of Jacques Loussier's Swing Jazz - the 1984 versions. I enjoyed the juxaposition of the jazz beat and the classical melodies. I found to be fresh and stimulating. If you like Jazz or Classical Music, check out this CD.

April is National Jazz Appreciation Month

'Jazz: a primarily American musical art form which originated in the early 20th century'.  Trying to define jazz beyond this becomes more difficult as the very nature of jazz is innovation. The musician, the instrument, the mood all impact what notes are played/heard.   Someone once said of jazz 'you'll know it when you hear it.'   Detroit's celebrating and a calendar of Jazz Appreciation Month (JAM) celebrations is available at Key of G.  For more information about JAM checkout The Smithsonian's webpage.

Vivere - The Best of Andrea Bocelli

With a voice that was described as “the most beautiful in the world," Andrea Bocelli collection presents many of the artist's most memorable vocal performances. Tuscany's most exciting and beloved export since Luciano Pavarotti is a phenomenon with an astonishing 30 million CDs sold, two World Music Awards, best-selling albums, and wildly popular sellout concerts on nearly every continent. The PBS production was slated to run only once, but due to its popularity it ran three times.

Acoustic Guitar Artistry

Watching and listenting to guitar master Robin Bullock might temp the average guitarist to put his or her instrument down, forever!  The challenge is to take at least one element of Bullock's exceptional performances on guitar and citern and apply it to one's own style or repertoire.  While the Mel Bay Guitar Masters Live series is oriented to musicians, this video should  also be of interest to enthusiasts of Celtic  and World Music.
