Book Club in a Bag Kit

Stiff [kit]: the curious lives of human cadavers by Mary Roach — This unusual and thought-provoking book club selection covers topics from medicinal mummies to cadaver models for crash-test dummies. The writer presents a well-researched, lively discussion of offbeat ways that the dead have served the living and treats medical as well as ethical issues.

Killer Thrillers

Vote Now! National Public Radio’s recent request that readers submit the names of what they believe are “the most pulse-quickening and suspenseful novels ever” apparently generated a list of more than 600 thrilling works. “A panel of experts then combined audience preference with their own judgment to narrow that list down to a manageable roster of some 200 favorites,” according to an NPR press release. You’re now invited to choose just 10 books from that list, with the goal being to narrow its count down to 100 titles.

Vote for your favorites. The poll will remain open until Monday, July 26, with the “100 last books standing” to be revealed on Monday, August 2. A printable list of the choices is available.

Award-winning, Peter May's terrifying new addition to his China Thrillers series, Chinese Whispers pits Beijing detective Li Yan and American pathologist Margaret Campbell against an unscrupulous foe who could prove to be their deadliest enemy yet.

Kay Scarpetta On Film

Patricia Cornwell's Kay Scarpetta mystery series is coming to the big screen. None other than Angelina Jolie will play Ms. Scarpetta. Producers Mark Gordon and Geyer Kosinski are hoping for a franchise out of Ms. Cornwell's books, though none of the films will necessarily follow the plotline of any particular tome. According to Variety,

This film won't be tied to a specific Cornwell mystery title. Much the way that Jason Bourne morphed into an action hero in plots not rigidly locked into the Robert Ludlum book series, the opera-loving coroner Scarpetta will be the lead in a suspense thriller in the vein of "The Silence of the Lambs" and "Seven."

Digging for the Truth

Forensic science(often shortened to forensics) is the application of a broad spectrum of sciences to answer questions of interest to the legal system.  Aaron Elkins' Gideon Oliver is a forensic anthropologist, Eve Duncan featured in Iris Johansen's books is a forensic sculptor. Kathryn Fox has a new series featuring pathologist and forensic physician, Dr.
