Did you know that March 14 is potato chip day? Potato chips came around in 1853 when Commodore Cornelius Vandervilt sent his fried potatoes back to a chef because they were too thick. The chef sliced them thin, boiled them in oil, fried them, added salt, and sent them back as a joke. But they were an immediate hit! One Michigan company that specializes in potato chips and celebrates its 80th year in Detroit is Better Made Potato Chips. Congratulations Better Made, on a successful Michigan business.
An apple a day keeps the doctor away, so the old saying goes. Apples are very healthy for you and better yet, they're a super delicious snack. October is apple month, and the perfect time for great tasting apples. Did you know there are over 7,500 different types of apple trees? Wow! And don't forget to try apples in different ways like in apple pie, caramel apples or apple muffins. Learn more about apples at the library and at the Michigan Apples site.
