Election Day in the United States has been held on the first Tuesday in November since 1845. November was chosen as the most practical month to hold an election since the multitude of voters were farmers and the harvest would be done by that month. Also, since many people had to travel to vote, holding the election in November would lessen traveling in harsh winter weather. Tuesdays were chosen to give the traveling farm families time to worship on Sundays and be back to market by Wednesday.
