Kindred by Octavia Butler

Originally published in 1979, Kindred is a story of a staggering depth and insight. Imagine this: It's 1976 and you're a twenty-six-year-old African-American woman who is suddenly transported to a plantation in antebellum Maryland during the year 1819. You've been sent to save the life of your white ancestor in a time when slavery is alive and well. What would you do? Dana, the main character, is both daring and strong. Her cunning and resilence coupled with Octavia Butler's gift of preparing the reader for the unexpected make this a wonderful choice for your next read.

Octavia Butler (1947-2006) was an American Science Fiction writer who won the Nebula Award, MacArthur Award and the Hugo Award during her lifetime. Check out other books by her here.

Oh, I love this book! It was one of the books we read in the science fiction and fantasy literature class I took in college, and it ended up being my introduction to a brilliant author I've come to respect and admire greatly. I definitely second Jillean's recommendation - Don't miss out on this compelling read!
