Fairy Tales for Teens

 

Some of the many fairy tales and legends adapted and retold.

Baker, Jennifer. At Midnight. High school junior Ella is at the mercy of a rich and cold-hearted stepmother after the death of her father, until intervention by a fairy godmother helps her discover true love.

Block, Francesca Lia. The Rose and the Beast: Fairy Tales Retold. Nine tales retold Block style, in gritty magical realism.

Donoghue, Emma. Kissing the Witch: Old Tales in New Skins. Daring retellings of thirteen tales featuring strong female characters.

Haddix, Margeret Peterson. Just Ella. In this continuation of the Cinderella story, fifteen-year-old Ella finds that accepting Prince Charming's proposal ensnares  her in a suffocating tangle of palace rules and royal etiquette, so she plots to escape. Also available on cassette.

Jukes, Mavis. Cinderella 2000. Ashley has her heart set on spending New Year's Eve 1999  at an exclusive country club party with an Almost  Boyfriend, but her plan is endangered by her stepmother and two bratty stepsisters.

Kindl, Patrice. Goose Chase. You'll find elements of many fairy tales in this novel--curses, spells, princes, and glass slippers. And Alexandria is locked in a tower--how will she escape?

Levine, Gail Carson. Ella Enchanted. In this Cinderella story, Ella was "blessed" at birth with the gift of obedience. She must do whatever she is told. How can she break this curse?

Napoli, Donna Jo. Beast. Told from an unusual perspective, the Beast's, this retelling of Beauty and the Beast is set in Persia. You can also listen to this book on cassette.

Napoli, Donna Jo. Crazy Jack. In this version of the traditional tale of the young boy who climbs a beanstalk, Jack searches for his father, falls in love with Flora, and learns the value of real treasure. Also on cassette.

Napoli, Donna Jo. Zel. Based on the fairy tale Rapunzel, the story is told in alternating chapters from the points of view of Zel, her mother, and the prince.

McKinley, Robin. Spindle's End. A Sleeping Beauty tale in which the baby princess, Rosie,  is cursed by an evil fairy and taken into hiding by a kind peasant fairy.

McKinley, Robin. Rose Daughter. The story of Sleeping Beauty is interwoven with the truth of the Holocaust in a tale set in World War II.

Wolf at the Door edited by Ellen Datlow and Terri Windling. Many of these adaptations are by well-known authors for teens, including Garth Nix, Jane Yolen, and Nancy Farmer.

Yolen, Jane. Briar Rose. The tale of Sleeping Beauty in the grim setting of the Holocaust.
