138th Kentucky Derby

The first leg of the Triple Crown begins Saturday, May 5th with the annual "Run for the Roses" at Churchill Downs in Louisville, KY. Grammy Award winning singer Mary J. Blige will sing the National Anthem prior to running of the 138th Kentucky Derby.

Ice Cold Gold

Meryl Davis and Charlie White, two figure skaters trained here in our very own Canton Michigan, just won their fourth consecutive U.S. Figure Skating Championship title. Not only that, but they're the longest running Ice Dance team in the U.S.! We make some mighty fine ice skaters here in Canton. Congrats to the medal winners.

Joe Paterno 1926-2012

Joe Paterno, the legendary Penn State coach, died January 20 in State College, Pennsylvania of lung cancer. The winningest coach in major college football, "JoePa" roamed the Penn State sidelines for 46 seasons, his thick-rimmed glasses, windbreaker and jet-black sneakers as familiar as the Nittany Lions’ blue and white helmets.

Red Wing All-Stars

Pavel Datsyuk and Jimmy Howard will play for Team Chara in the NHL All-Star Game hosted by the Ottawa Senators on Sunday, January 29th. The Red Wings head into the All-Star break with NHL's longest home game winning streak in 36 years with 17! College Football Bowl Frenzy and More

College Bowl Madness begins Saturday, December 17th with the New Mexico Bowl continuing into 2012 culimnating with the BCS Championship Bowl on January 9th. Western Michigan, Michigan State and Michigan will see action in the Little Caesars Bowl, Outback Bowl and Sugar Bowl, respectively. In addition, the Wayne State Warriors will play for the NCAA Division II Championship on Saturday December 17th.

Senior Wii Bowling

Seniors have fun on a Wii Bowling League on the first and third Tuesdays of each month. It's great fun and competition, with no special skills required. Join us on January 3 and January 12 at 11:00 AM.

Keeping Up With The Lions

Are you keeping up with the Detroit Lions? They are having a really great year (finally). Their next game is Sunday, December 4th, against the New Orleans Saints. Since it's an away game, and unless you are among the very lucky folks attending, be sure to read up on your favorite team on their website or in our nonfiction collection. Go Lions!

Verlander Named American League MVP

Cy Young Award winner Justin Verlander has also been named the American League's Most Valuable Player for 2011. He is the first starting pitcher to win MVP since 1986 when Roger Clemens took the honor. Only six other pitchers in MLB history have won both the Cy Young Award and the MVP honors in the same year: the Dodger's Sandy Koufax in 1963, St. Louis' Bob Gibson and Detroit's Denny McLain in 1968, Oakland's Vida Blue in 1971, Milwaukee's Rollie Fingers in 1981 and Detroit's Willie Hernandez in 1984.

Tiger Ace Wins Cy Young Award

Justin Verlander of the Detroit Tigers has been named the 2011 American League Cy Young Award winner by the Baseball Writers Association of America. The 28 year old right handed pitcher who finished the 2011 season with a 25-4 record and 250 strike outs won the award by unanimous vote. In addition, Tiger's manager Jim Leyland was the runner up for American League Manager of the Year. Other recipients of 2011 MLB awards include former Detroit Tiger Kirk Gibson who was named the 2011 National League Manager of the year and former Tiger centerfielder Curtis Granderson who was named Outstanding Player in the American League. MVP awards for the American League will be announced on November 21st with both Justin Verlander and Tiger's first baseman Miguel Cabrera in the running.
