Low Vision Reader

Canton Public Library maintains an Optelec ClearView Low Vision Reader for library users. The 18" Widescreen monitor has a fully adjustable monitor arm, adjustable brightness, and Photo Mode for viewing pictures. The LV Reader is located in Adult Services near the Library's fireplace. Assistance is available at the Adult Services Help Desk.

Diabetes and Service Dogs

When we think of services dogs, the images that come to mind are dogs that help people with physical disabilities. But what may surprise you is that special service dogs can alert families when a loved one has diabetes. Diabetic-alert dogs are trained to detect dangerous drops in blood sugar. To learn more, read this Wall Street Journal article, read a book about service dogs, or read a book about diabetes.

Yoga and Langar

Kundalini Yoga strives to develop strength, awareness, character and consciousness to the purpose of cultivating values, truth and compassion. Join certified teacher Rajwant Kaur Khalsa as we learn this physical and mental discipline on Thursday, January 31 at 5:00 PM. Registration is required. Adults and teens (age 14 and up) welcome. Come with an empty stomach, a full water bottle and a yoga mat or beach towel for your comfort. Rajwant also suggests bringing a throw or sweater to toss over your shoulders as you cool down.

Biggest Loser - Buddy Shuh

You have made your commitment to Canton Township's 100 Days to Health. Biggest Loser Contestant, Buddy Shuh shares the triumph of losing 163 pounds while overcoming the grief of losing his baby daughter. Buddy's spiritual journey is told in his book, The Story of Bella. Buddy will be speaking as well as selling and signing copies on Thursday, January 17th at 7:00 PM.

Little Explorers Healthy Kid Demos

Come join the staff of Premier Athletics: Little Explorers as they jump and tumble, dance and sing.  This program incorporates music and games to inspire children to learn and grow both mentally and physically.  Caregivers and their children aged two to five are encouraged to check it out for themselves on Tuesday, December 18 at either 10:00 AM or 2:00 PM.  Please only attend one session.

yoga cat: yoga catOn Thursday, December 6, 7:00-7:45 PM, Thirupu Siva will teach young people from 6-16 years of age the basic asanas, building up to various intermediate poses.  Please wear loose fitting clothing and bring a towel or yoga mat to work on.  Registration for this program begins on November 22.

Older Adults November 2012

There are benefits you may be missing. The National Center for Benefits Outreach and Enrollment, a National Council on Aging program, provides a checklist for programs and benefits available to Older Adults. BenefitsCheckUp quickly finds federal, state, and private benefit programs available to help you save money on health care, food assistance, prescriptions, utilities, and more.

Winter CSA: Locavorious

Locavorious has partnered with several small farms in communities around Ann Arbor to offer frozen produce subscriptions. They are similar to shares offered by regular CSAs (Community Supported Agriculture) but only available during the winter months. They prepare and package local produce when it is fresh and preserve it in a community freezer to distribute to subscribers during the winter months. You can find more information about local CSAs by visiting CSAFarms.org. Also, check out what the library has on the topics of local foods and organic foods.

ABC Activity Time

ABC Activity Time will begin November 12. This is an informal session where parents, caregivers, children and babies meet together in a relaxed environment. This drop-in playtime includes sensory activities, puzzles, and matching games for children ages birth to 5, with caregiver. No registration required. Program takes place in the Community Room, unless otherwise noted.

Sessions November 12-December 15

  • Mondays 10:30-11:00 AM and 1:30-2:00 PM
  • Tuesdays 7:30-8:00 PM
  • Wednesdays 10:30-11:00 AM and 7:30-8:00 PM

New Michigan Law Protects Young Athletes

new law will go into effect requiring the state to provide educational training materials for athletes, coaches and parents on concussions. Coaches will be require to remove players from the game if they are suspected of having suffered a concussion and return to the field once a doctor gives a written approval. Alzheimer's Prevention Resource

100 simple things you can do to prevent Alzheimer's and age-related memory loss by Jean Carper provides some simple tips that you can add to your everyday routine now that may help prevent dementia in the future. Some tips are basic to all-around good health, but others might surprise, like consuming apple juice and vinegar. Readers young and old will likely feel motivated to make some simple lifestyle changes to help push mental decline even further into the future.

The Healing Power of Pets

Did you know pets may help you live a longer, healthier life? An article on the WDIV site describes how having pets can contribute to a lower stress level which can help lower high blood pressure. Getting a dog will help you get outdoors and exercise more. Studies also have shown Alzheimer's patients with pets have less anxious moments than those without pets. You can also save a life by adopting from an animal shelter. October is National Adopt a Shelter Dog Month.

Issues and Challenges in Caregiving for Mature Adults

In recognition of Alzheimer's Awareness Month, we are pleased to bring Dr. David M. Sengstock of Oakwood Hospital to the Canton Public Library. Dr. Sengstock, a geriatrician specializing in internal medicine and hopice and palliative care, will share the best ways for loving family and friends to be alert to signs of change and how to make sure our loved ones live in a safe environment, fulfill their needs for care, and help them live independent, healthy lives as long as possible. This is a must program for anyone with aging parents, friends or spouses. Join us on November 8 at 7:00 PM. Light refreshments will be served and brain-teaser games will be available to take home and tease your loved-ones' brains.

Canton Farmers Market: Harvest Celebration

Join us on Sunday, October 14 from 9:00 AM-1:00 PM at the Canton Farmers Market's Annual Harvest Celebration. Held at the historical Preservation Park, this celebration will include crafts, stories, and Halloween Parade, so come dressed in your finest costume garb. See you there!

Harry Potter's World: Renaissance Science, Magic and Medicine

CPL is pleased to host Harry Potter’s World: Renaissance Science, Magic, and Medicine. This fantastic travelling exhibit, curated by the History of Medicine Division of the National Library of Medicine, explores the world of Harry Potter and its roots in Renaissance magic, science, and medicine. In 1997, British author J.K. Rowling introduced the world to Harry Potter and a literary phenomenon was born. Although a fantasy story, the magic in the Harry Potter books is partially based on Renaissance traditions that played an important role in the development of Western science and medicine. Come to CPL from October 22 to November 30 and read all about the potions, immortality, monsters and more written within the pages of the incredible, ground-breaking series.

Today's Pharmacy

There are over-the-counter medications, vitamins and supplements. It seems the more years we add to our lives, the more meds we need to sustain good health. Oakwood pharmacist, Larry Diamond, will discuss these drugs, their interactions and how to use them safely.
