The Federal Trade Commission (aka FTC) is the nation’s consumer protection agency. The FTC works to prevent fraudulent, deceptive and unfair business practices in the marketplace. They have created PASS IT ON  an FTC website containing articles, presentations, video, and activities — with information about scams and pass on some information that could help someone you know.  Health, finances, privacy are just some of the issues they focus on.  There is a link to the FTC for individuals wanting to report a scam.

Conversations with Caregivers

Shiffman Medical Library Outreach presents Conversations with Caregivers, an all-day workshop covering a wide range of topics such as Avoiding Legal &  Financial Pitfalls as Caregivers, Helping People Assess and Talk About Health Care Choices, and Successful Aging: Avoiding the Pitfalls of Crisis-Driven Aging Decisions.  The workshop will be held on Wednesday, April 16 at Charles H. Budgeting 101: A Balancing Act

Created by the Federal Reserve in 2002, Money Smart Week is a public awareness campaign designed to help consumers better manage their personal finances. This year, during the first week of April, organizations across the country will be providing free programs to address financial concerns. This year we are joining forces with the Financial Planning Association of Michigan to present this great program. Local FPA member Russ Jones will cover the basics of creating and maintaining a household or personal budget, including why to create one, how to create one and, most importantly, how to stick to one. Our presenter will also addresses the issue of debt – how to manage it and ways to begin eliminating it. Join us on Tuesday, April 8 from 7:00-8:00 PM for this fabulous and informational program!

is offering free tax counseling on Tuesdays through April 15.  Morning and afternoon appointments are available with a tax counselor volunteer. Federal Tax Form

Federal Tax Form 1040 is now available. We also have State of Michigan MI-1040 forms and Instructions and the MI-1040CR-7 (Home Heating Credit Claim). You can find them in the rack in front of the Help Desk.

Savvy Seniors: Tax Filing
