Origami Expert, Charles Esseltine

Join origami expert, Charles Esseltine, on Thursday, October 4 from 7:00-8:00 PM to learn about basic folds and shapes. Charles will demontrate a variety of origami models, including some fun, Halloween designs. All materials will be provided. All ages and experience levels welcome. Registration is required and will open on September 25. Little hands will need assistance from big hands. Warning: All attendants must arrive willing to have fun!

Starfish Family Services: Talk to Me

On Thursday, October 25 at 9:30-11:30 AM Starfish Family Services will be educating parents, grandparents and caregivers on the art of using conversation to develop launguage skills with the five years old and under set. They will be presenting support strategies for sharing intentional conversations and introducing new words into your child's vocabulary. Attendees are encouraged to bring their children into the Purple Room to play with Starfish's licensed daycare providers while the caregiver's program takes place in the Community Room.

Join Door to Door Organics for a light lunch and to learn about using and eating organic, healthy, local options. Door to Door has partnered with local farmers and growers to provide the freshest, healthiest food. Haunted Michigan with Kristy Robinett

Join Kristy Robinett as she takes you on a journey of the strange and unusual and tells tales of centuries past, legendary stories, folklore and ghostly experiences. Kristy will also sell and sign her latest book, Michigan Haunted Legends and Lore on Tuesday, October 2 at 7:00 PM. This is a great way to kick off the spookiest month, here at CPL.

NHS Homework Help Returns October 1st

NHS students are here to provide 3rd-12th graders free homework help. If you are interested in getting tutored:
  • You must be in 3rd through 12th grade
  • If you are under 12, your parent must remain in the library
  • You must bring the assignment and any other needed materials

DIA Fabergé Exhibit

Please join us on Thursday, October 18 at 7:00 PM as we welcome The Detroit Institute of Art education presenter to hear about the upcoming exhibit, Fabergé: The Rise and Fall, The Collection of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. The exhibit will run from Sunday, October 14 through Monday, January 21. It features such treasures as the Russian imperial jewel-encrusted parasol and four exquisite Imperial Easter eggs. One stunning example is the Imperial Tsesarevich Egg, made of lapis lazuli, diamonds, and gold and opens to reveal a miniature portrait of young Alexei, the heir of Tsar Nicholas II.

CVS Flu Shot Clinic

CVS Pharmacy is offering flu shots at CPL on Thursday, October 18 from 2:00 to 5:00 PM. If you have health insurance with a major company, your shot is free. This is the combo shot protecting you and your loved ones from H1N1 as well as this year's strain of Flu. Let's all stay healthy this winter and get our flu shots… at Canton Public Library.

Open Chess

Tim Heller, avid chess player, hosts informal open play on the second and fourth Sundays of most months in the Community Room while providing instruction and pointers on improving your game. CPL at The Canton Farmer's Market

On Sunday, August 19, CPL staff visits the Canton Farmer's Market to host storytimes and crafts. On this Sunday, Canton Leisure Service will also be holding a book exchange. All are invited to bring their gently used books to the market where you may exchange with other book lovers for some fresh titles to add to your home library. The Canton Farmer's Market is open from 9:00 AM-1:00 PM. Storytimes are at 10:00 AM and Noon. Open to all ages.

Sylvan Saturday: Back To School Boot Camp

Children's Traditional Yoga Basics

On Wednesday, September 5 from 7:00-7:45 PM, Thirupu Siva will teach children five-nine years old the basic asanas building up to intermediate poses. If attending, please wear loose fitted clothing and bring a yoga mat or towel on which to learn. Registration for this program begins on August 24 at 9:00 AM.

Starfish Family Services: Problem Solving I

On Thursday September 13, from 6:30-8:30 PM, Starfish Family Services will present the first part of their informative parenting workshop on Problem Solving with your child. Titled "Turning Conflicts into Learning", they will present strategies for using conflict situations to develop important social skills as well as methods of using natural or logical consequences for setting limits. This program is developed for parents, grandparents and caregivers of children birth to five years old. Children are welcome as Starfish provides licensed daycare in the Purple Room during the workshop.

Dr. David L. Holmes, Professor Emeritus of religious studies at The College of William and Mary, shows how our last twelve presidents' decisions were influenced by their faiths. Learn about Nixon's betrayal of Billy Graham, JFK's philandering, Eisenhower's attempt to conceal his parents' Jehovah's Witness backgrounds and much more. This is a must for history buffs and the politically aware. Join us on Wednesday, September 12 at 2:30 PM for this thoroughly researched, unbiased account.
