We're looking for some special people to become part of the library catalog. Are you a religious leader in the Christian, Muslim, Hindu or Jewish faiths? Are you a vegetarian, a policeman, an atheist, a gay/lesbian person, a U.S. military veteran, a rock recording artist, a published author or any other interesting or unusual person? If so, we want you.

The Canton Public Library is starting a Living Books program where patrons can check out "living books" (that would be YOU) for 30 minutes of face-to-face, one-on-one conversation. These interviews are intended to answer questions for the curious, satisfy special interests and beliefs and learn from others' experiences. With dialogue comes understanding - with understanding comes tolerance.

Have you ever heard of government grants? This is government money that, for qualified individuals, does not have to be repaid.  There are grants for women, minorities, business, housing, college, and private reasons. You could get $20,000.00 to fix your house, $50,000.00 to start up a business, another grant to pay your tuition and another to help pay your bills.

At $1.50 for the first page and $1 per additional page for outgoing domestic faxes (international faxes are $4.95 for the first page and $3.45 per page thereafter), Canton Public Library offers self-serve faxing at reasonable rates. But did you know that in many cases, you can scan and email your document(s) for free — avoiding fax charges altogether? Canton Public Library has flatbed (letter-size) scanners you can use at no cost. Once you have your scanned documents, simply send them to the recipient from your web-based email account from the same computer you used for scanning.

Four years ago, a high school friend of mine called me and told me that  he had seen my name on the "missingmoney.com" website as having a check for less than $100.00 in the Michigan Department of the Treasury "Missing Money" account.  I went to the website, filled out the downloadable application and 3 weeks or so thereafter, I had a check in the mail for $75.00.

I thought, because of these difficult financial times, and because The Canton Public Library has a duty and a purpose to help the Community and our Patrons get through them, that I would share the website, which is  www.missingmoney.com.  This website is subscribed to by the Treasury Department of 26 states, and 2 Canadian Provinces.  It is not one of those "Send us some money, and we'll what happens" sites.

Filing for unemployment benefits just got a little easier with the release of Filing your claim for unemployment benefits & finding a job - a joint effort of the Unemployment Insurance Agency (UIA) and the Michigan Works! Agencies. This 17 minute DVD provides information on the claims-filing process for unemployment compensation and answers many of the typical questions asked by unemployed workers. Multiple copies are available at the Library.

Wireless and remote printing to the library's printers is now available. Send print jobs from your laptop here in our building or from any place with internet access - like your home office. Your job will remain in the Copy Center print queue until the close of business on the day it's sent.

This is an incredible database. The other night when I needed census information for the Plymouth-Canton area for my meeting, I logged in and printed various demographic trend summary reports that gave me all the numbers that I was looking for. If you are trying to determine where to locate your business, identify your competitors, or find target audience for your advertising dollars, DemographicsNow has reports arranged by zip codes, cities and metropolitan areas in Michigan.

Money may not be the root of all evil, but in Bad Money: Reckless Finance, Failed Politics, and the Global Crisis of Americn Capitalism, Kevin Phillips makes a pretty good case that our current financial crisis is rooted in its irresponsible manipulation.  This book clearly explains the history and details of the reckless behavior that created instability in global credit markets, which is now taking its toll on the broader economy.
