Give us your tired, your poor, your worn out magazines, newspapers, and catalogs; your huddled masses of school and office papers; the wretched refuse of your teeming junk mail yearning to be recycled! Place your recyclable papers in our large bright yellow and green bins (in the southwest corner of the library parking lot), and the library will receive money from Paper Retriever Recycling. You'll not only help the library, but you'll also make a positive impact on the environment.

Professional organizer, Susan Carmody, of the National Association of Professional Organizers and her local company, Perfectly Placed, along with Mary Vangieson, the Wayne County Resource Recovery Coordinator, will give us a head start on Spring cleaning. They will share easy tips on getting organized and recycling in our homes. Bring your old mercury thermometers and replace them with a new digital one. Clean up your act and join us on Thursday, May 12 at 7:00PM in the Community Room. No registration is needed.

Green is definitely not just a color for beans anymore. We all need to be "green" and take responsibility to care for our wonderful planet. Kids can be just as responsible as parents in this area by doing simple things like turning off the lights when they leave a room, or using both sides of a sheet of paper. Of course using the library is a fantastic way to be green, by using the books and sources we have, instead of buying new ones. There are also some great books at the library to help remind kids of the important part they can play in being green. Check out Sandy's Incredible Shrinking Footprint, Uno's Garden, or The Lorax, which all are fun stories to read and help remind us to take care of our Earth.

From now through this Friday, April 30, all the recyclable paper you place in the library's bright green and yellow Paper Retriever bins (located in the southwest corner of the library parking lot), will generate double earnings for Canton Public Library. So gather up all your old newspapers, magazines, junk mail, school and office papers (cardboard and phone books are not accepted). We'll be happy to lighten your paper load while you help the library earn extra cash!

In honor of Earth Day, read a book about recycling. Here are a few easy-to-read choices:

• Recycled! — a beginning reader story about recycling in the classroom
• Choose To Reuse — a board book to teach even the very youngest about recycling
• Reusing and Recycling — an easy-to-read nonfiction title about recycling household materials

Beginning November 1st Target will give a 5¢ discount for every reusable bag customers use to pack their purchases. Over the next three weeks CVS will also roll out a similar program in its stores. Participating CVS customers will receive $1 cash bonus on their CVS card every four times they buy something but don't request plastic bags. Smaller retailers such as Trader Joe's, Hiller's and Whole Foods have been offering financial incentives to re-use bags for some time. With large retailers like Target and CVS following suit the two programs could keep billions of plastic bags out of the environment and nudge other big retailers to take similar steps.
