The American Library Association has announced the winners of the 2012 Youth Media Awards. Here are the winners, with special mentions below:

2011 Michigan Senior Citizen of the Year Award Program
Each year the Michigan Office of Services to the Aging and the Michigan Commission on Services to the Aging join to honor outstanding contributions by Michigan's older citizens. The Senior Citizen of the Year Award highlights the contributions to civic and social life made by persons aged 60 years and older. Awards are given in two categories:
- Leadership in the community
- Service provided to others
Below are guidelines and nomination forms for the 2011 award. Nominations must be submitted by organizations and signed by the presiding officer, e.g., the executive director, CEO, or board president. Nominations must be postmarked by Monday, May 2, 2011 and sent to:

Local Illustrator Wins Caldecott Medal!
Each year, the Caldecott Medal is awarded to the most distinguished American picture book for children. Ann Arbor illustrator Erin E. Stead has won the 2011 Caldecott Medal for the picture book A Sick Day for Amos McGee! In this funny story illustrated with woodblock prints, Amos, a shy zookeeper, gets a surprise visit from his animal friends while at home with a cold.Congratulations to Ms. Stead on winning this prestigious award!
2010 Nero Award Nominees Announced
The Wolfe Pack, a New York-based fan organization, has announced its nominees for the 2010 Nero Award, "presented each year to an author for the best mystery written in the tradition of Rex Stout’s Nero Wolfe stories." The contenders are:

2010 Crime Daggers Finalist Announced
From a slightly longer shortlist of contenders, the British Crime Writers’ Association (CWA) and its corporate partners, Specsavers, Cactus TV, and ITV3, have now announced the four finalists in each category for the 2010 Gold, Steel, and John Creasey Dagger Awards. Winners will be announced on Friday, October 8. A special awards ceremony that night at London’s Grosvenor House Hotel will be filmed, and then televised on ITV3 the following week. 52nd Annual Grammy Awards
Jeff Bridges hosts "music's biggest night" when the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences presents the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards on January 31, 2010. Presenters include Ringo Starr, Green Day, Pink and many more. Beyonce and Taylor Swift lead in nominations, 10 and 8 respectively. For up-to-date news follow the Recording Academy on social networks Twitter and Facebook. Also, vote for your favorite Bon Jovi song to be performed at the ceremony by the GRAMMY nominated band.Val McDermid wins CWA Diamond Award
Britain’s Crime Writers’ Association has announced that Scottish novelist Val McDermid is “the recipient of this year’s prestigious CWA Cartier Diamond Dagger Award, which honours outstanding achievement in the field of crime writing." Ms. McDermid began writing in 1987 when Report for Murder was released and over the years has won numerous writing awards for her mystery stories.- madame librarian

Forbes Travel Guides
Forbes has issued its first set of four and five star awards for hotels, and restaurants as the new brand name for what was formerly known as the Mobil Travel Guide. The awards were given out under the Mobil brand for more than 50 years. The ratings are based on evaluations of more than 500 attributes. Claudette Colvin takes the prize

Canton Public Library is the proud recipient of a Design Excellence Award for commercial landscape. The award was presented to the library by the Canton Committee for Community Excellence. The colorful READ berm, on the east side of the library facing Canton Center Road, was recognized by the Committee as promoting community pride. The library strives to be a pleasant, welcoming environment for the many patrons who visit. Sisters in Crime Announce Davitt Awards
Beautiful Place To Die (PanMacmillan), the debut novel by Sydney-based filmmaker turned crime writer, Malla Nunn, tonight won Sisters in Crime’s Davitt Awards for the best (adult) crime novel by an Australian woman in 2008.
Blue Mountains writer Catherine Jinks took out the Davitt (young adult) for Genius Squad (Allen & Unwin)

The Private Eye Writers of America announced the nominees for the 28th. Annual Shamus Awards on Friday. Eleven of the fifteen novels nominated are available at our library.
