Battle of the Cupcakes

On Saturday, July 28 at 11:00 AM, test your baking skills in our Battle of the Cupcakes. Bring three delicious cupcakes for our panel of judges to evaluate on both taste and presentation.

Your cupcakes should be from the same recipe so our three judges are all tasting the same thing. Prizes will be awarded for the winners in the following three age categories:
  • Tweens (Ages 11-12)
  • Teens (Ages 13-18)
  • Adults (above age 18)

Cookbooks for Kids

If your book group is like mine, food is a big part of every meeting. There are some wonderful cooks in my group, so when it's my turn to host I turn to these cookbooks. What's your favorite cookbook?

The cat who — cookbook by Julie Murphy & Sally Stempinski

Recipe for a book club: a monthly guide for hosting your own reading group: menus & recipes, featured authors, suggested readings, and topical questions by Mary O'Hare and Rose Storey

Cookies!

Starting your holiday baking? You'll find some excellent books under Christmas cookery. But so many are already checked out! Try Joy of Cooking. It has one of the two recipes I am asked for every year — Angel Slices. The other recipe is for Double Chocolate Walnut Biscotti, which you can find on epicurious. An extra bonus: both recipes are incredibly easy.

New Cookbooks!

Today I got two books I have been eagerly anticipating. It was like Christmas in November! The first is a world-wide compendium called The dumpling : a seasonal guide by Wai Hon Chu and Connie Lovatt. The second is My bread : the revolutionary no-work, no-knead method by Jim Lahey. You may know Lahey from Mark Bittman's writing. I've tried bread made with his incredibly easy method and it is delicious. I can hardly wait to try out the recipes.

Kneadlessly Simple

Fresh, delicious, homemade bread that is easy to make. Sounds too good to be true, but that's the claim for Kneadlessly Simple, a book on order at CPL. I'm eagerly awaiting my chance at the copy, and as soon as I've tried out a recipe or two, I'll report back and let you know if the recipes really work as promised.
