Since the early 1990s, the number of individuals diagnosed with autism has risen at an astonishing rate. In recognition of Autism Awareness Month, local author Ryan Ennis will present key information for understanding and strategies for supporting children with autism. With 16 years of experience as a school teacher and a media specialist, Ryan has developed programs and written two books on the subject, The Thursday Surprise: A Story About Kids and Autism and The September Surprise: a Story Helping Kids Understand Autism and Co-Teaching, which will be available to purchase. The University of Michigan's Museum of Natural History presents a series of three fun family workshops about science. This year, to tie in with their temporary exhibition at the Museum called Evolution and Health (February 2012-January 2013), they are focusing on showing families what doctors mean when they talk about health, and how factors in our daily lives may affect our health.

We invite you to register for the final workshop in the series titled Build the $6 Million You: Making the most of your health. The event takes place in the Community Room on Saturday, March 10, 2012, from 1:00-2:00 PM. You will learn what you can do to improve and maintain your health. You will examine how your environment, healthy eating and exercise influence your health and well-being. Workshops are designed for children ages 6-11, accompanied by an adult. Internationally best-selling author Colleen Gleason will discuss her books and her writing process. Gleason's books include the popular Gardella Vampire Chronicles and the Regency Draculia Series that starts with The Vampire Voss. She also penned a short story, Northanger Castle, for the anthology Bespelling Jane Austen.

In addition to her works under her own name, she writes an exciting post-apocalyptic romance series under the pseudonym of Joss Ware. Gleason's publishing plans include a steampunk young adult series. Please join us on Thursday, April 26th at 7:00 PM for a great evening about reading and writing.

Get on the bus! University of Michigan is sponsoring a bus to take you on a day trip to their Natural History Museum in Ann Arbor and participate in Health Discovery Day.

Health Discovery Day is the final celebration of the Vital Signs Health programs CPL has offered over the last few months. Discover the connection between health and evolution. Come find out if you are a "super taster", and what that might have meant for our ancestors' survival. Ever wonder what's in a cell? Explore some specimens under a microscope and make you own model cell to take home. Test your vital signs just like the doctors do and learn about some of the things you can do to make sure your body continues to run like a well-oiled machine. So many activities and so many guests… who knew health could be so much fun?! The event is free, open to the public and takes place throughout the entire Museum.

The bus will be leaving Canton Public Library on Saturday, March 24th at 9:00 AM and returning to CPL at 5:00 PM. Please bring a lunch with you or plan to walk to one of Ann Arbor's great eating establishments. Online registration begins March 10th and is required for all participants. Open to children age 6-11. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

Shine up your shillelaghs, put on your silly green hat and celebrate St. Patrick's Day with really fine, fun Irish music by local artist Terry Murphy. Murphy will have you singing by the end of the evening on Thursday, March 15 at 7:00 PM.

Everyone's Reading promotes community dialogue through the shared experience of reading the same great book… and we do have a great one for everyone this year. Sandra Brown's Lethal will have you on the edge of your seat from the first page to the last. Brown, the author of over 60 best sellers, certainly has a way with words and your emotions. She is making two personal appearances in the Metro Detroit area: Thursday, March 22 at 2:00 PM at the Rochester Church of Christ and at 7:00 PM that same evening at Adel Shalom Synagogue in Farmington Hills. We have free tickets to both events available at the information desk beginning March 12 to Canton cardholders in good standing. It promises to be fun and informative events.
