Hey Kids!!!
SANTA CAME!!!! And you know what? He brought me a little buddy! Which is, in fact, what his name is! Little Buddy, or LB for short. I've been having so much fun with my new friend! Now I have someone that I can play games with when the library is closed! The best part is that LB is travel-sized. That means that he can sneak into people's suitcases and go on vacation with them. I never get to go anywhere, so I am excited to see where LB ends up going!
I hope you and yours had a nice holiday too. Did you get anything? What did you do? Can't wait to hear all about it! Until next time!

P.S. Here's a picture of LB! Better get used to him, because you might be seeing him a lot!

Hey Kids!
It's the week of Thanksgiving! I know most of you are headed out to see family and friends. I have plans for Thanksgiving too! Me and my animal library friends — the giraffes, the Monkeys, the armadillo, and all the others — are going to have a great big Thanksgiving here at the library. We're going to raid the staff fridge, and then we'll play some video games and watch a movie on the big screen in the Community room. Of course, this is a secret from all the librarians, so don't tell anyone! I told you because I like you!
That reminds me. At Thanksgiving you're supposed to think about what you are thankful for. I'm thankful for all of you! You always make my day when you come into the library and say "Hi!" And I'm thankful for the library for giving me this great job and feeding me with cookies. What are you thankful for? Let me know — respond to the blog!
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving whatever your plans are!

Hey Kids!
I am a proud Bear today. Why? Because it is National American Teddy Bear day, a day celebrating a population I am proud to represent. When I think of the great bears, like Smokey, and Fozzie and Yogi, who have gone before me, my bear hair just stands straight up. Maybe one day, I'll be listed with them. Be sure to hug YOUR bear today. And give him an extra cookie for me.

Hey Kids!
Boy did I have a great morning! I got to help out at the Halloween Fun program. Not only that, I was the Grand Marshall for the Trick or Treat parade portion of the program! What fun! I saw some old friends and made some new ones. I really really loved all the kids in their cool and cute costumes! You should really should have seen all the fun we had. But guess what? You still can! Just check out the Canton Public Library's Flickr account! 'Cause let's face it, no one can resist seeing pictures of cute kids in costumes. Which reminds me, are you coming to the library on Halloween? I wanna see your costumes! So make sure the library's on your stop this Halloween — early because we close at six. You might just see some unusual library staff that day--and Friday too!!

Hey Kids!
I just wanted to make you all aware of some very important holidays this week. Tomorrow, Wednesday, October 14th is National Bring Your Teddy Bear to Work day. It's kinda like take your Children to Work Day, except for bears. Make sure your parents know! Probably the best way to make sure they celebrate it would be to sneak your teddy bear into their work bag before they leave. Then make sure you ask what your teddy did at work when they get home.

Hey Kids!
Well, you voted, and the results are in! Now you need to come to the Library to check out my cool Halloween costume! "Wizard" won with a whopping 30 votes. "Superhero" came a distant second with 11 votes. And there was even a write in vote for "Princess". Hmmmm, Royalty could be a good costume for next year. I like the sound of King Thorndyke. Thanks for all your votes--in the library and online! And don't forget to wear your Halloween costume to the library too, 'cause I want to see them! Now I just need to practice my magic words. Abracadabra, Abracazoom! Until next time,

Hey Kids!
Wow! I've already had lots of friends voice their opinions on my poll for what I should be for Halloween. Have I heard from you yet? Don't forget you have until next Monday, September 28th to cast your vote, either here on the website or in the Children's Library! I can't wait to tell you the results, so here's a teaser based on current results--you guys sure like Harry Potter! Will that hold true through next Monday? You'll have to wait until October to find out! What are you going to be for Halloween? If you need some ideas, there are lots of great books here at CPL to give you some ideas!!! Can't wait to see what you'll be for Halloween too!

Hey Kids!
I need your help with something. See, my third favorite holiday (after Christmas and the First Day of Summer Reading) is coming up soon. It’s Halloween! But I can’t decide what to be. I have to decide soon, because I get to wear my costume for the whole month of October!! This is where you come in. You’ll see that I’ve posted a poll below on the web site. You can either vote for what you think I should be for Halloween there, or you can come into the Children’s Library and vote! Sorry, there’s no prize. The library pays me in cookies--that’s how I keep my nice round physique! But you’ll definitely see what costume was the favorite, 'cause that’s what I’ll be wearing come October! Of course, in order to make my costume in time, I’ll need all your votes by Monday, September 28th. Gotta have time to make that costume you know! Thanks soooo much for your help!

Hey kids! It’s Thorndyke again. Next week is going to be a great week at the library. Know why? Because it’s Children’s Book Week! The librarians are so very excited. They are going to dress like their favorite book characters all week, which explains why you’ll see them looking sillier than usual. I’m planning on getting in on the fun too, but I still have to think of a costume. I’d love your suggestions! And we’d love for you to tell us who your favorite book characters are too—you could even dress like them! Don't worry. If you can’t make it to the library next week, we’ll have pictures of the great costumes up in the library! Man, CPL’s such a fun place!

Hey Kids! As of today it’s less than 50 days until Summer Reading (and summer vacation—hint hint!). It’s even starting to feel like summer! Thankfully the library is nice and air conditioned. Very important for someone who wears a big fur coat like me!

Hi Kids! It’s Thorndyke. Did you know that today is Administrative Assistants day? Administrative assistants is a big word for people who work really hard making sure things run smoothly and orderly. The Canton Public Library has lots of great administrative assistants. One of them works in the Children’s Library. Her name is Miss Erin. She does lots of great stuff for the children’s librarians. She makes all our Summer Reading Logs look so cool. You might also see her feeding the fish, or just generally being helpful. So if you see Miss Erin today, make sure you tell her thank you! We love you Miss Erin!

Hi Kids!  Thorndyke here!  Did you know that today—March 19th –is Absolutely Incredible Kid Day?   And since all the kids who come to the Canton Public Library are absolutely incredible, it’s a very important day to celebrate.   My favorite way?  With a song!  Maybe "Skinnamarink" by Sharon, Lois, and Bram. Another great way is with ice cream!  May I suggest the flavor Bear Claw?  It’s my favorite!   Have a great week, kids!

Hey kids! Guess What? Today it is only 100 days until Summer Reading! Aren’t you excited? This year the theme is Get Creative @ Your Library—but I can’t tell you any more because that would spoil all the surprises we have planned! All I can tell you is that it will be FUN! And guess what? Today also means it’s only 100 days until summer vacation. Good times. So if it gets cold later next week, just repeat this to yourself “Summer Reading’s Coming! Summer Reading’s Coming!” and the day will be a whole lot sunnier.

Boy!  I can’t wait for March to get here.  Why?  Because March is Reading Month!  And Reading Month means First Grade Round Up!    This is the 18th year the  Children’s Tween and Teen Services Librarians will host first grade classes from local schools.  And I haven’t missed one yet!    Kids get a tour of the library and meet my Giraffe friends Caribou and Rafiki.  Then they make a craft and see a really funny puppet show.  The best part of First Grade Round Up is that each First Grader gets a library card and checks out a book that day

In honor of Valentine’s Day (by the way, have you seen my nifty Cupid costume yet?) I thought I’d share this conversation I overheard in the Children’s DVD section.

Boy 1 (picks up Free Willy 3):  Let’s get this one.
Boy 2:  No! Not that one.  They kiss!
Boy 1 (shocked): They kiss the whale?
Boy 2: No!  The boy kisses the girl!
Boy 1: Ew! Gross!  Let’s get something else.

Thorndyke Thoughts

Hey kids! Thorndyke here. After watching the library happenings for over 15 years, I’m glad they’ve finally given me a voice. ‘Cause nobody knows more about this library than me, except for maybe Miss Kristen and Mrs. Havenstein-Coughlin, but they go home at night. I tell you, I have the best life—sitting by the birthday wall, watching the kids come for storytime and summer reading. And the librarians are some of my best friends! They have a pretty fun job. So next time you’re at the library, stop by and wave hello. I’ll be looking for you!
