Remembering Peter Falk

Actor Peter Falk, best known for his role as the rumpled cop on the television series Columbo, died Thursday in Beverly Hills, California at the age of 83. He was a five-time Emmy winner for the career-defining role as an absent-minded detective who always got his man. In addition to television, Falk appeared in numerous films and received successive Academy Award nominations for Murder, Inc. and Pocketful of Miracles. He also appeared in the critically acclaimed A Woman Under the Influence and the family favorite The Princess Bride.

Father Dowling Creator Dead at 80

Prominent Catholic author, professor, and cultural commentator Ralph McInerny died last Thursday, January 29 at the age of 80. McInerny was the creator of the popular Father Dowling mystery series, which became a television series starring Tom Bosley and Tracie Nelson in the 80s. A prolific writer, McInerny also wrote the University of Notre Dame Mysteries, the Andrew Broom mysteries, and several books under the name Monica Quill.

Emmy Award Nominations

Nominations for the 2009 Emmy Awards were announced earlier today. The winners will be announced on September 20 during a live broadcast on CBS to be hosted by Neil Patrick Harris.

Digital TV is Almost Here!

The digital TV transition happens on June 12! If you still haven't purchased your converter box or are still confused as to what's happening, go to dtv.gov for the answers. If you think you're ready but not sure, all Michigan television stations are conducting a final test to let you know if your television is ready. It is scheduled for Tuesday, June 9 at 7:59 p.m. The test will be conducted simultaneously on every over-the-air station. If you see a green "PASS" screen you're all set. However, if you see a red "FAIL" screen, time is running out! Check Michigan DTV for Me for more information.

Friday Night Lights

If you're not watching Friday Night Lights you're certainly missing one of the best programs on television. Based on the book and movie of the same name, the show stars Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton, and takes place in the small town of Dillon, Texas where high school football is the center of many people's lives.

Digital TV transition delayed!

Both the House and the Senate have recently voted to delay the switch from over-the-air analog signals to digital from February 17 to June 12, 2009. President Obama has promised to sign the legislation, granting a reprieve to the as many as 10 million consumers who are still unprepared for the digital transition. The government's $1.5-billion program to send $40 coupons to analog TV owners toward the purchase of a converter ran out of money last month. It is estimated that there about 3.2 million coupon requests on the waiting list. For more information go to dtv.gov.

Countdown to Digital TV

HourglassBeginning February 17, 2009, TV stations serving all markets in the United States will begin airing digital television programming. At that point, they will cease broadcasting on their current analog channels. If you own an analog television and do not purchase a new digital model, you may buy a converter box which will change digital signals back to analog. More information is available at dtv.gov.
