OverDrive Media Console on iPad

Rejoice, all iPad users! Our eBook supplier OverDrive has just released a free app for iPhone®/iPad® v2.2

iPad users will now enjoy custom designed graphics whether they are reading an ePub eBook, listening to an MP3 audiobook, or browsing the OverDrive Media Console Library. The app supports landscape and portrait orientation. A new calendar icon displays the number of days left until the title expires.

The free app can be installed on iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch® devices running iOS (v4.0 or newer). The updated app is available from:

With the free OverDrive Media Console app for iPhone, iPod Touch and Android, you can download both ePub eBooks and MP3 audiobooks directly to your device.

Make Your Own eBooks

Here's a fairly-quick way to turn websites, Microsoft Word documents, and plain text files into eBooks for your portable device or computer:
  1. Go to ebook.online-convert.com and select "Convert text to the ePub ebook format"
  2. Select the file from your computer, or copy/paste the URL of the file into the applicable form field
  3. Set the optional settings to reflect the title and author of the work
  4. Click "Convert File" to begin processing
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions to download the converted file
  6. Transfer to your reading device per the specific device's instructions
I personally use an iPhone with the iBooks app. Loading a "book" onto my phone was as easy as emailing the file to myself and tapping the attached file from the Mail app.

Many readers also display PDF files. If you wish to read long-form content from your computer on your reader device, PDF print utilities like PDF reDirect for Windows or the built-in functionality on the Mac can provide a quick and compatible way to create eReader files.

Choose from over 15,000 free public domain titles selected by OverDrive from Project Gutenberg, and mounted on the library's eBook Collection page. These titles never expire and won't count against your library checkout limit! They are for the use of any one with almost no restrictions whatsoever. Our page includes tips on using these files with Adobe Digital Editions.

Read eBooks on Your Smart Phone Today!

Download OverDrive Media Console v2.0 for Android or iPhone today! This newly released app enables you to download and enjoy EPUB eBooks in addition to the MP3 audiobooks. Downloads can be done directly to your iPhone, iPod Touch, or Android phone/tablet.

Smart Shopping for an eBook Reader

Looking to buy an eBook reader for someone for Christmas? If you are interested in a device that is compatible with the library's free eBook collection, don't forget to check this list before shopping. A compatible device will allow you to check out and download free titles by using your Canton Library card. Our eBooks are available in ePub, Adobe PDF, and Mobipocket formats.

eBook & Audiobook Survey

We have purchased extra copies of some of the most popular downloadable titles and added them to the library's eBook page. Log in to your account before searching, you'll see, e.g., Ken Follett's new, unabridged audiobook Fall of Giants with the Advantage icon. Your Canton Library card will allow you check out or wait for this copy.

Magic Tree House Goes Digital!

If you can't find the Magic Tree House book you are dying to read in the Series aisle here at the library, you can now read it in electronic format. Check out any of the 43 titles now available in the United States and Canada wherever Random House e-books are sold. A fun-filled Magic Tree House website is also a great place to visit online this summer.
FYI - Over 70 million copies of the books in this beloved have been sold since it was first published in 1992. It has been translated into 31 languages and is sold in 31 countries. Kids, parents, and teachers all know that the adventures of Jack and Annie instill of a love of reading in young readers everywhere.

Kobo eReader Compatible with CPL eBooks!

Yes, another new eBook reader is coming to the market! CPL's eBook supplier, OverDrive, just posted the preliminary testing results for the Kobo eReader and it appears that it is compatible with Adobe EPUB and PDF eBooks downloaded from the library. A full round of testing will come soon. Stay tuned for the full review on the Kobo eReader next month.

OverDrive's free app enables over-the-air MP3 audiobook downloads on iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch from CPL's eAudiobook collection. With OverDrive Media Console for iPhone, after logging in to My Account on CPL's eBook website, you can wirelessly download any MP3 audiobook to your Apple device.

Transfer an eBook to a Reader

Wonder how to transfer an eBook from CPL's collection to a reader after check-out? Just a few simple steps. Load the Adobe Digital Editions to your computer; create an Adobe ID and activate your computer and device with the same ID. Download the title, plug the eBook reader into the computer, click on the title and drag it to the device's name. Sony users need to download an extra library software.
