charges on hold items

Hi, I was not aware that there is now a charge on items not picked up on hold shelf. 99% of the time, I am able to pick up the items on hold shelf, however when we have guests over or kids are sick, then I found it difficult to pick up items. If I had known, I would have tried to cancel the items online. I am so sorry for the inconvenience. I am sure I missed the update on this new update. Could someone please let me know when did this start and where was it announced? Thank you.

Thanks for writing to us. We began charging for unclaimed holds on February 1st. Signs have been posted on top of the Hold Shelves since December, and the January edition of Connections ran an announcement to introduce this change. We also added wording to our web site that appears at the time a hold is placed, as well as to email and print notices that are sent out when a hold is ready for pickup. Please understand that this is not in any way an attempt to “make money”, nor is it punitive action on the part of the library. We are hoping that this change will reduce staff time and help our newer materials to circulate more quickly to patrons who are waiting for them. You can always avoid this fee by canceling or freezing any holds you are unable to pick up before the expiration date. Go to My Account , or call the library at 734-397-0999 and press 3.
