This Website

This website does not match the quality of the Canton Public Library (nor the taxes that Canton residents pay for services). The site is clunky, unintuitive and difficult to navigate. It would be money well spent to hire a better web site development company to build a new site from the ground up.

Thank you for your feedback regarding our website.

As this website is the home of CPL on the web, it's important that it provide the information and interactivity of the physical library in the most accessible manner possible. If it fails to live up to that standard, consideration should be taken to improve the experience for our patrons.

Any specific feedback you could provide regarding improvements that could be made to the website would be tremendously helpful and greatly appreciated.

Once again, thank you for writing us today.

OK, I see there have been no changes made.
#1, provide a "Log In/LogOut" link near the top-right of all pages.
#2, provide a means for me to update my address, etc on the "My Account" page.
#3, run this site's html tags through validation again. I'll bet the site needs to be updated to newer standards. For example, the "Ask a Librarian" link is cut off using Safari.
#4, fix the "Patron Record" button (or its target page) on the "My Account" page. The instructions " If you end up at a login screen, hit the back button and try again" are indicative of a built in problem with this site. I still had to use my library card (entering the 16 digit number) to renew some books. Shouldn't need to do that since I've already logged in.
5, When trying to create a new password, the validation message tells whether or not the password conforms to site requirements, but if the password doesn't conform, the message doesn't tell the user exactly how complex the password needs to be.

Correcting the items above would be a good start.

I am a 53 year old woman who is self-taught on using the computer.
I love some of the features on this site, such as being able to search for books, order books through MelCat, renew books online, etc.
However, I find that the majority of the site is not user-friendly . . . I don't understand what the majority of the links are meant to be used for or the buttons like 'edit' and 'view' (I have gotten in some of them and become frustrated with what to do)
So, I just use the few things that I understand how to do and that is it!!
I totally agree with the statement that I read that states "The site is clunky, unintuitive and difficult to navigate".
I would think that with all the resources available to the Canton Public Library, this site could be re-done.

Thank you for getting back to us with specific things to consider.

  1. Account info in the upper-right-hand corner is certainly a common design pattern. We will look at this during any further iteration of the design
  2. We renew your card and update your address every three years on your birthday or sooner to ensure you continue to receive account updates and the service you expect
  3. This site, save for YouTube embeds, validates as both HTML5 and XHTML 1.0 Strict. The "Ask a Librarian" link being cut off was a decision based on a CSS design constraint. The site's viewable area on full-screen devices ranges from 766px to 1001px depending on viewport. The "Ask a Librarian" text's default size is 17.48px set in Calibri font. At full site width and in the default font, the full text appears even after using a browser's text zooming mechanism. On machines that do not have Calibri (which comes with Microsoft Office 2007+, Windows Vista and 7, etc. and is estimated to be on over 60% of actively-used computers), the site displays in Trebuchet MS. This font appears slightly larger at the same point sizes, so at full site width will become covered slightly after just one text zoom. The coverage is exacerbated on smaller viewports, such as monitors set to 800x600 or other small resolutions. As with the account link location, the layout of the "Ask a Librarian" link is a topic of consideration for further iterations of the site design
  4. The patron record button is admittedly buggy, and has been since the site launched. This is a combination of multi-site and browser cookie issues. When you press the patron record button or sign in with your name and barcode, you're actually signing in to a different site than the website that takes your username and password. They are styled to appear as one site for general usability purposes, but in fact the accounts are not tied together at all. This may also become a design consideration in the future
  5. The password validation prompt merely suggests ways to strengthen a password and does not indicate that a low-or-medium-strength password will not be accepted. In fact, passwords on our site can be a single character if so desired. The box only mentions that numbers, letters of different cases, and symbols, with a minimum length of 6 characters is recommended to avoid security concerns. The language used in this prompt is default for all sites built on the Drupal 6 content management system. The wording of the prompt can be augmented, so any suggestion of how to improve it would be appreciated

Once again, thank you for your suggestions. They will certainly be considered for any further design improvements to the site.

I would first like to say that I think the website is great. I enjoy being able to search the library database and request books for pickup.

That being said, I would like to see a few small improvements to the lists option you provide.
I am able to go thru the library site and select books and add them to my list to request at a later date, which is very helpful. However, when I try to request from my list, the books are not added to my requests.
I think it would be beneficial to have the option to request the books from my lists. Once the request is processed, the book should be removed from the list also.

It would also be helpful to have the opiton to requests multiple books from my lists as well as from the main site.
I frequently check out several books by one author that are in a series. Currently I have to select each book then go back to the item to select the next book in the list.

Thank you taking into consideration these requests.
I appreciate all you do to make the library wonderful for everyone.

How do I look up a book I am interested in?
I am looking for Paper Pieceing in quilting. I am not sure of the exact title but I know it is something like"356 Patterns to Paper Pieceing."

I read in Connections that we should sign up for the library's enewsletter as Connections will only be in that format come January 2012. However, I do not see a place on the website where that can be done. Can you direct me please?

When I refresh the reading history screen, it deletes an item from the list, even with no box checked for delete.

"If you get a login screen, hit the back button and try again". In Canton, Michigan we can't get a web page built which works? This same problem is at least two years old and the same, sub-par status quo is still annoying the people who pay for this ?

Clicking the "Patron Record" button works as expected the vast majority of the time. When it doesn't, the text you quoted is potentially helpful to users.

Why do I have to enter my library card number every time I access this site and make a request via web with a secure login and password??
With a secure login and and password I should be able to store that information, otherwise the login and pass provides no value.

Sorry, I'm a certified user experience analyst via Human Factors International and this is a UX best practice. Your site is great, but this drives me nuts.

Our catalog is experiencing a problem storing authentication information and we are working with the vendor of the software to resolve this issue. Until the problem is fixed, please log into your patron record at https://catalog.cantonpl.org/patroninfo before conducting your search for materials and placing a request.
